Question: Swapping Clusters (Legally)

My instrument cluster currently does not have tach so I want to purchase a cluster with a tach.

Car: 98 Civic Hatch
My current cluster has 50K kms.
The tach I'm looking at has 30K kms.

How do I transfer the mileage over legally? Can I go to a shop to and have them add the difference? How do I go about getting the actual mileage documented? And how much would this cost?

Thanks.

Or can I just pull the odometer out of the old cluster and put it into the new cluster?

No one cares about the legality of this anymore...basically, as long as you don't take it to a mechanic for service, no one will know what mileage you have/had on it. Just keep it for your own records so you can do the maintenance. If you REALLY want to get it done legaly, you can go to the dealer and have them install it, they are the only ones authorized to really legally do the swap on clusters. It'll cost you though, and for such a simple install, I say faaack it.

i heard another way of doing it legally with documents however is just to note down what the orginal milage is and what the new milage on the new cluster starting point.
i could be wrong, but i heard that before.

That's what I did, but I have been told that's not good enough. Someone "reliable and trustworthy" in the MOT's eyes' must actually be present for the swap so that they document the mileage.

oh yeah right

so can't you bring a MOT person while your doing the swap so they can sign and varify that you did do the swap and blah blah blah and there is no signs of rollign back?

Well the mileage difference/gain isn't that great (less than 20k), that's why I'd rather do it legit. The risk doesn't justify the reward in my case.

I've seen some god aweful integration of external tachs and am trying to keep my car clean and streamline. Trying to stay away from the whole rice movement.

I dont get how adding a tach is rice? Some people (Like me) rather just do that then go through the hassle of swapping tachs, and logging down mileage etc.

When a relatively small tach cab be installed that isn't noticeable that much at all.

The whole rice thing has gone out of control, I wrote up my feelings about rice on another board.

there is simple way of doing this.

Get the normal tach taken apart (each gauge comes out individually)
Get the new tach taken apart aswell (each gauge also comes out individually)

But for this mod all you need to do is take out the speedometer gauge for both.
then swap them and you should be fine.

(that will only work if both gauges are of the same make car and same gen) since the speedometer always remains the same size for the most part.

Now if the cluster u got is different meaning gauge face wise u can always remove the face and then interchange them internally.

Remember, the screws on the back of each gauge have a seal/paint on it. The minute you try to change the guage assembly only, ie....speedo/KM, you will break the seal.......if you every decide to sell your car, and they check and see that the seal is broken/missing..........lets just say, you wil get into some touble.

Take it to the dealer. They will write it in your owners manual....there is a page in there for the dealer to do this.... go take a look. (at least my manual does.....5th gen)

How much will the dealer charge to do the cluster swap?

Just say your car was broken into and it was stolen...

You replaced it yourself...

The irony is that my car was broken into, they took everything that could quickly take apart, rims, deck, speakers, cds they even stole my airfreshener but left my poor ole cluster behind (now my cluster has a complex).

If I purchase a cluster with 60Ks and just wait untill my car reaches that mileage could I just do the swap then without paper work?

Sure...

Who's gonna know...

Not many people remove the cluster on a used car to check for tampering anyway...
