Setup for One (possibly Two) 12" ID-MAXes

As of right now, I have a 12" IDMAX D4 V3 in my car and am planning to put a second one in by the summer time. It's in a ported 2.8 cubic foot box.

My problem is the amp. Becuase of my previous set up, I am running a Kenwood Excelon KAC-X811D, as my car was set up for pure SQ. Because the ID is a Dual 4 Ohm (not by choice) I need an amplifier that can put 1000 RMS of raw, clean power into this sub, and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

However, since I am getting the second one in the near future, I was thinking of juust buying one ridiculous amp that will be able to power both of them when I buy the second one, rather than buying a second amp later on.

So with that said, anyone have any experience or suggestions regarding what kind of amp (or amps) I should use?

imported_hdave 30-Jan-2006 10:59 PM

any quality amps that can push over 1500 RMS @ 1 ohm will be fine
most quality big monoblocks put out their power at 1 ohm anyways so its better than they are dual 4's

memphis
ppi
alpine
fosgate
orion
crossfire
arc
dei/viper
elemental designs
RE
DD
and the list goes on....

Hmm, as I understand it, if the sub is a dual 4, and i drop it to 2 ohms, and put 500 RMS into each coil, that would max the sub, no? (Full 1000 RMS).

Also, what do you think of the hyphonics amps? they are monsters, and are fairly cheap. If i do get the second sub, that means im gonna need an amp that does around 2000 continuous, no? (As I understand it)

Correct me if im mistaken.

1 dual 4 ohm sub can wire to 2 or 8 ohms
2 dual 4 ohm subs can wire to 1, 4 or 16 ohms

stear clear of hifonics (atleast the lower lines like brutus, zeus etc..)
they are prices low for a good reason. just crack it open and look at the internals and compare them to a quality amp and youll see what im talking about

idmax's are very efficient drivers, you only really need like 600 rms or so to get them moving very nicely, i suggest giving them atleast 750 rms each to get them at their full potential so 1500+ is a good figure to aim for.

imported_Thrill_House 31-Jan-2006 02:48 AM

Trust me when I say that the IDMAX 12 does not need more then 600watts rms and 1000 peak, 1000rms is a little high. And if your car is geared more twords SQ then I dont see why you would want so much power anyway. BTW if you ran 2 IDMAX D4's you could wire them to produce a 1ohm load then run them bridged in mono.

eD 9.1

imported_hdave 31-Jan-2006 01:42 PM

the nine.1 is a very good solid amp, and itsb acked up with a 3yr warranty

too bad it isnt 300 usd shipped anymore

imported_eric 31-Jan-2006 04:31 PM

call them up and see if they have a B stock 9.1 it will save you a lil bit.

imported_hdave 31-Jan-2006 04:58 PM

the b stock costs 250+ shipping and only carries a 90day warranty.

its better to buy used off a forum
the going rate is pretty much 250+ship for a nine.1 and the 3yr warranty is transferable

Yea, that amp is indeed exactly what i'd need.

ThrillHouse, to answer your question, I love SQ, but two of them would be simple there to blow away somebody if the need for it ever comes. It's like pimp fasctor. You don't NEED two cars (certain cases), you don't NEED a mansion, you don't NEED a rolex. It's all about want, just for the sake of having it.

I wanna have a nice quality system, that can also do some damage. And though two ID MAXes is not some SPL competition-type stuff, but it's good enough for the road.

I want to stay away from 1ohm because of distortion.

By the way, i was looking at the Arc Audio 1500-XXK. The specs on that are just like the eD.

http://www.arcaudio.com/arc-05/amplifiers/xxk_1500.htm

Check it out.

imported_hdave 31-Jan-2006 08:59 PM

Arc is a solid company backed by a solid reputation
you wont go wrong for sure with it

how much for it btw?

imported_hdave 31-Jan-2006 09:12 PM

oh hey im not sure if that amp will work out for you.

your subs are D4's right? if so it wont push em to their max

imported_BunEm 31-Jan-2006 09:43 PM

No but if i Run one amp to each sub, it will put in 900 RMS into each such at 4ohms which is perfect for me. However, that is IF their ratings are continuous, not peak. The amp can go from 400-600 from what ive seen. I've already e-mailed the reps, but they don't seem to be replying yet.

We shall see. The eD seems like a good answer too. I can always get two of these, and run each sub at 2ohms each, putting 900 RMS into each. Seems good.

imported_hdave 31-Jan-2006 11:43 PM

those are rms numbers not peak.
just to confirm.. your subs are both dual 4 ohm subs right?

if so, why spend so much on two Nine.1's when you can get an orion 2500d (nice to have overkill) for that price

imported_JusBlaze 31-Jan-2006 11:49 PM

If your gonna run 2 amps (one to each sub) , since the subs are dual 4's they cant be run at 4 ohms..only 2 and 8 i think...your gonna have to wire them down to 2 ohms..so your gonna need 2 amps that are are putting out about 750-1000 rms CLEAN at 2 ohms to make them pound like u want.

Like hdave said I'd go with an amp that has a solid name formed.

Alot of amps claim to put out xxxxRMS@xohms but they actually put out xRMS@x ohms..so i'd do some research. Get like an ORION 2500d or something...but im biased cuz I love orion.

I could have told you all of this in person. I dunno why i posted it.

imported_hdave 01-Feb-2006 10:39 AM

the hcca2100 is a beast lol (big red amp right?), dont rmeber the specs but i think it was a 2 channel that can go down to 1/2 ohm each channel or 1 ohm bridged

imported_Audio Heaven 01-Feb-2006 11:23 AM

Orion Old Skool amps and subs are the best. Ya the 2100 WOW what an amp. An old friend of mine had 2 and it was AMAZING

I have have had an Orion 2100 Cobolt for 16 years now with no problems at all.

Still pounds like the day I bought it :)

The Orion HCCA are amazing. I'm thinking of either running either HCCA's or Hifonics in my car when I do it up.

here are the specs on the HCCA 2100.

100W X2 @ 4 OHM
200W X 2 @ 2 OHM
400W X 2 @ 1 OHM
800W x 2 @ 0.5 OHM
400W X 1 @ 4 OHM
800W X 1 @ 2 OHM
1600W X 1 @ 1 OHM

Harsh, you were right about it being big, it's almost 2 feet long!

imported_JusBlaze 01-Feb-2006 05:25 PM

im waiting on some losers credit card to be empty so he can bid on it for me.
