Gauge Needle Busted

I have a big problem. I decided to give the fork a try to take out the gauge needles to paint them. I had no problem with the tach and speedometer, the gas needle wouldn't budge and the small pin that connects the needle busted off deep in the whole. How many parts need to be replaced? Is this a fix it my self or take it to the shop? Please tell me this has happened to someone else.

Careless and Carless,
JohnC.

I'm surprised you got the tach and speedo needle off without braking them. When i was installing my indiglo's i busted the gas needle, i tried to glue it on but that didn't work.If you remove the back portion of the guages you'll see the gas guage is all one unit. I don't belive you can fix it, the bad news is that a new gas guage for a 95 CX cost's $140 so you're looking at a lot of dough. There are 2 options: buy a used guage cluster, buy a new guage.
Unless anyone else knows how to fix them or if they can even be fixed

Thanks for the info. It's a relief to hear that someone else has heard the painful snap of a needle popping off.

I think I'll go for a drive to cheer myself up, atleast I'll have an excuse if I get pulled over... "officer, good thing your here, someone stole my cluster!"... That is, if I don't run out of gas first.

I have no idea if this is repairable or not, but give Start Auto Electric a call, they specialize in this stuff so no harm calling. There on dundas and sherboure, don't got the # but should be in the book.

Assuming I do have to replace the cluster, how should I deal with the kilometer history? The last thing I want to do is have to take off a needle to roll back the km's.

A used cluster may cost the same as a new gas guage so i would just replace the gas guage. You already have the speedo and tach so check the local junk yards and see what you can find. If not talk to the dealer.

This is what you will see when you go to honda parts department

If you want to buy just the gas gauge, it would cost you well over $100

If you could find a good deal on used cluster, you may want to get one of those and swap the gas gauge part. That way, you don't need to worry about the mileage roll back issue. Also, save the extra parts just incase you break something else in the future.

When you paint the needles, you don't need to take them out. Just mask and spray. Save you a lot of headache.

I found the gas and temperature gauge part of the cluster for $60 at a Honda dealership, a small price to pay for an important lesson... Don't remove the needles. I was extremely gentle, but the small plastic shaft the needles connect with are just too delicate.

Thank you all for the help.
