Buying the right stereo system

Hello folks:

at the moment, I'm interested in putting a stereo system in my car...

That said; there's currently a Kenwood CD Deck in there... everything else (speakers and tweeters) are stock.

So my question now is what do I look for (at the stores) when buying a stereo system?

I know I'll need an amp but there's 2 and 4 channel amps (I dont' know what that means)... Which one should I get?

Also; if I buy a 400 WATT AMP (for example), does that mean I'll need to get SUBWOOFERS and SPEAKERS that total less than or equal to 400 WATTS?

ok we first gotta find out what you want? do you want to just add some bass to your current setup or change out your speakers for better ones and possibly add a 2 or 4 channel amp to power all 4 speakers or ther 2 fronts in the car?

if you want to add some bass and upgrade the sound at the same time your best bet is to upgrade the front speakers to a nice set of coaxials or a nice component set, and put a power amp on them, like 50 watts RMS X 2 or 75 X 2, and keep the rear stock or upgrade to a more decent mid level brand.

now for subs, do you want alot of bass or would 1 10 or 12 suit your needs?

for an amp for the subs try and match its power with the power handling of the sub, if its rated 150 watt rms and the sub is 4 ohms get a amp that does 150 watt rms at 4 ohms.

if you need anymore help feel free to message me or any of the other great audio experts on the board.

Have a question about subs as well
So lets say i get a 500 Watt RMS amp, and i want to add 2 10" Subs. Do both subs have to total upto 500 watts RMS, making each 250 Watts, OR can both subs be 500Watts each.

Whats the diff in 4 ohms and 2 ohms subs/amps?

it is beter to have subs that are equal too the total wattage output of the amp or higher value....

if you get subs with a lower rating and the amp hits it's peak then good by subs
