Blue LED Scanner?

my buddy gave me a blue LED scanner, question is, it has three wires, black, red, and yellow i know red is postive, black is ground, what is yellow for?
also i heard it has to be hooked up to something that goes on when the car is off, how will that work?

yeah, i have one of those... i have it hooked up to my alarm though. but you can have it hooked up w/out having an alarm as well. i would tell you how to hook it up if i only knew. But you can install it 2 ways. wif alarma and wif out.

one of the wires goes and attaches to the ignition wires( w/out alarm) so when car shuts off the led goes on

Red......12v constant
Black.....Ground
Yellow....depends what you want it to do

Without alarm......
hook up the yellow wire to something that only works when you turn the car on...ie...ignition.
and hook up the rest of the wires the regular way...ie power and ground.
If you hook it up this way....it is off when the car is on, and it turns on as soon as you turn the car off.

with an alarm.....
red and black as above, the yellow should go to your starter kill output from the alarm brain.....colour of wire on your alrm will depend on who makes it (usualy orange though).
If hooked up this way, as soon as you arm the alarm, the starter kill is activated (so the car can't be started), the wire for the starter kill goes to ground, therefore turning the led scanner on.

You can also hook it up one more way.

Red......power (constant)
Black...ground
Yellow....run it to a little switch, and then run the other side of that switch to a ground.
If you hook it up this way, you can turn it on any time you want by flicking the switch. (car can be on or off....alarm can be on or off)
This way is graet if you do car shows.....put the car into valet mode....turn the light on.....it looks like the alarm is on, but it will never sound the horn.:working:
