bought a car with a alarm already on it, but has no remote

my questions is: can a universal alarm remote work or do i have to install a whole new system?

There is no universal remotes for alarms. Your best bet is to check what brain for the alarm you have. If it"s a no name than you are probably better off replacing it, but if it's a name brand like Viper or Compustar than you can get replacement remotes.
