CAI/Low-End Torque question ????
Hey all,
I've got a 98' DX HB with a D16y7 in it and i was wondering.. though it has little to start with, will a CAI drop low end torque/pull enough to make a noticable difference. If it isn't, can anyone suggest a decent intake, my budget is around the 75$ makr. And if so, how noticable is the change, and would you suggest a short ram air instead?
Also, I've heard of people cutting out their resonator and dropping in a K&N Drop-In filter into the stock intake. Will this give me the same 2-5hp gain that i would get with a CIA or SRA?
Thanks all,
and please be nice, i've got only limited knowledge thus far. Bare with me =]
P.s. If you've done the above mod, can you post some pics and/or instructions on what to do. Thanks

you won't notice anything other than more noise, honestly.
I'd get the cheapest filter on a stick (short ram) you can find, then when the filter is dirty, replace it with a good re-useable one like a K&N or AEM dryflo air filter. Most intake systems come with cheap/crappy filters that aren't typically re-useable.
I've been using the 1 K&N filter I have for 3 years already and the other one for about 6 years now.
To make a noticeable difference on those engines you need to switch to the D16Y8 intake manifold and throttle body along with whichever intake system you want, get a header and an exhaust. This will actually make a difference, but you could potentially be spending $1000+ for all of it (including labour if you're not doing the work yourself)

save for turbo or motor swap. dont waste your money on intakes..especially brand name. hell you can make your own intake for about 40$ or less including the filter. or just buy one from ebay...but you wont notice any power gains. all show no go.

i wouldn't even touch that engine if i were you..not unless you plan to go turbo down the road or make a mean N/A build which would require internal work..why spend all this money just to make it as good as a Y8/Z6 with an added 15hp max from the I/H/E..that'll never make you feel satisfied aside from the new sound.
i've got a Y8 and threw a CAI on it cuz i like the sound. that's it that's all for now since i'm not sure if i'll turbo or swap. the Y8 just isn't very satisfying stock or even lightly modded..going turbo would mean i'd have to replace the header and exhaust with turbo-friendly parts (an ideal N/A exhaust does not have a wide enough diameter for boosted engines). in some cases, like when some ppl have short rams or those who want to colour match piping or those who have piping that routes differently, ppl may replace the intake too..
basically all i'm saying is that you should decide what direction your headed in and then spend money based on your final goal. imo i'd throw on a cheap intake with a good filter and call it a day..at least until you're ready for some heavy mods. until then, save your money for repairs or suspension and body work..
