Best Exhaust - Headers - Cat for B16a in an EG6

Hey there. Just wondering what would be the best/affordable Exhaust/header/cat set-up for an EG6 with a N/A B16a? Up to $2000.

Thanx

you'll want a 2.5" exhaust and hi-flow cat, preferrably mandrel bent, something Stainless Steel. I'm not sure how loud you can tolerate or what you're looking for in terms of sound, but I like magnaflow oval style mufflers more than cannister style mufflers. The magnaflow oval mufflers come in different sizes, the bigger the muffler typically the quieter the sound, but you can only fit so big of a muffler on a EG.
Also, resonators will help with keep the raspyness to a minimum while also bringing the noise level down some.

As for the header, the vibrant j-spec is a nice peice and has a 2.5" collector.....you'll want something with a 2.5" collector if you're using a 2.5" exhaust. 4-2-1 or 4-1 design is up to you. Typically the 4-1's are more for top end power, but I find the 4-2-1's also provide great top end power, while helping with midrange torque. The Edelbrock header is also decent for the money. Both of the 2 headers mentioned provide good ground clearance, especially compared to those "race" replica headers.

For 2G's you could build yourself a nice custom exhaust system with cat/res/muff and still have lots of money left over for a good header.

Let us know more what you're looking for in terms of performance/sound and we can help further.

Ross $2000 ???? i paid $250 and got a complete custom exhaust (quality pipes) with high flow cat and res. 2.5 inch piping with a DC sports 4-1 chrome header, it was a huge upgrade from stock pipes and with a better header thats all ill need. good luck, your budget should be 650$ tops unless you want to buy a $700 header

Seen. When the original d15 motor was is in, there was a DC header, Magnaflow hi-flow cat and Magnaflow cat-back w/the 4" CAN Muffler. It was very loud. Like hard to have a conversation over 100km/h. It was a nice set-up. Anyways, the headers were toast, melted the cat ceramics into a ball. Still have the cat-back!

Soo
4-2-1 headers - Vibrant J-spec
2.5" Mandrel Bent SS
Resonator
Hi-flow cat - Specific make?
Cat-back/Muffler - Specfic make?

The sound of the Magnaflow is nice, though i find it just a little too loud. Especially when the vtec kicks in.

anything oval (like the stock ones) typically is quieter than the cannister style mufflers. The magnaflow on my car (18" oval) is straight through design, but not too loud. I have a baffled resonator (not 100% on the length) which I found really helped with noise at highway cruisin speeds, but I'm sure I lost some power with the baffling.
Typically anything quieter will be restricted with baffles to help eliminate noise, so essentially quieter = less power
There are quieter exhausts out there that still make good power.
Unfortunately this is one of the compromises of modding cars for more power.

I've blown up a vibrant and magnaflow high flow cat myself, so I don't know what to recommend there.

Either way im screwed for noise. haha. Well, ive gone this long with it.

How about hallowing the cat and putting a sleeve inside to make it seem legit? There are no emissions here.

I was looking at those today. Everyone seems to be happy with Apexi products.

I purchased the Megan Racing catback for my ek 2 years ago and i really liked it. Great build quality, wasn't loud, comes with a silencer. Very similar to the apexi system and it was really cheap less than $500 shipped to my door. Try looking into that. Came with all the gaskets and hardware, it was 2 1/4" stainless mandrell bent.

I can recommend magnaflow high flow cats. I've used them on all my past vehicles with excellent results. Had it on my cavy with a turbo and had no issues.

You can get an assortment of sizes and lengths and prices are very good depending on where you buy from.

Vibrant J-spec 4-2-1 header - I agree it's your best bet for ground clearance, cost, availability and power...otherwise something wild like a HyTech or 'Rage Header' like they have on the 'King Motorsports' crate motor b16.
2.5" Mandrel Bent SS - 2.5 inch yes, Mandrel Bent who cares especially if your worried about cost; just let a custom exhaust shop bend up some pipes. Seriously...save your money.
Resonator - oh definatally
Hi-flow cat - magnaflow/carsound ??
Cat-back/Muffler - you can try an OBX twinloop to cut out more sound...i'm using one it seem to work but some people complain about them falling apart...has not happened to me yet.

I also agree that the Apexi WS is good also.

I also agree that mandrel bent piping isn't super necessary on a n/a engine. I'm using crush bent on my car, but the exhaust shop that did it, did a really nice job, so it doesn't look all nasty at the bends.

im almost certain the vibrant 4-2-1 j spec will outperform a hytech rep on a b16. please dont compare a "rage header" or any hytech replica crap against a genuine, custom Hytech unit.

I have a d16 not a b so as for headers can't really say but my current setup is N/A tilll the boost kit is complete and the new motor/tranny are built and all installed hopefully by spring but anyway I'm running a OBX SS header heat wrapped, magnaflow cat (only since september but so far so good and I drive a lot and hard) to a Skunk 2 axle back (N1 style) I actulally bought the apexi n1 and when I opened the box it was pakaged wrong and the gave me one for a coupe so I brought it back and all they had for the hatch was the Skunk 2 setup so I took it and 2 years later still sounds great even the mustang loving techs at my old shop admit my car sounds really nice and not like a fart can civic they hate so much.

4-2-1 headers - Vibrant J-spec
2.5" Crush Bent SS
Resonator
Hi-flow cat - Magnaflow
Cat-back/Muffler - Magnaflow/Apexi WS2

I'm going to check out Youtube later to see if i can compare sounds.

You guys have been some great help as usual. Maybe we should start a pole. I believe it would be quite interesting.

Ok, i've got a much greater idea now. So, where would be a good place to go for quotes/install?

forgot to mention the intake can have an effect on sound I've got a big bore throttle and a skunk 2 IM. that"S more under acceleration you'd hear that but still thought I'd mention that since some people ignore the intake when thinking about the sound thier engine makes

I don't know if youtube will really help compare sounds cuz you don't know what was used to record the sound or the setting difference between your speakers/stereo and the set up of the recording device sould alter the bass of it. in person is really the only way to go.

Another good quiet exhaust would be the R*S*R cat back but its a bit on the pricey side.
