ZC Engine problems.. need help
Hey
I got a 91 civic si. Last year i got an engine swap and put in a Zc engine. I just took the civic out a week ago. And it ravs really weird. Say im driving and i stop at a light after awhile it will rav by its self... up down up down. And when im driving say i down shift to like 2 seems like im gonna stall... Can anyone help me please.... ps. Also i got a light on.. how do i get the codes for the light. Thanks... |
does the revving up and down go away when the engine warms up??
|
check what the code is first and then advice can be offered from that point. Scanner is your best bet or you can do the trick with counting flashes (not sure exactly how to do that)
|
Well how do i know what the flash is. Like i can count it but wher e do i found it what it means.....
And it seems to rave up and down when its hot.. so maybe after 10 minutes of driving it will start doing it... Then say i give it some gas.. sometimes it will stop... GRR civic |

GRR civic That should help in figuring out what the codes are, and what they mean. |
wow.. thanks thats a big list..
So im just talking about the light under the passanger feet right. Just a red flashing light.... I think it only reads up to 20... so is it still the first codes you in that list.... Sorry kinda lost with this stuff.. Wish i new more. Im new to the hondas. |
Find the 2 pin connector in the passenger footwell. It should be in a green rubber holder with another connector.
Jump the 2 pin connector with a paperclip or peice of wire... gah forget it. Found this: [CEL what do I do now?] That should explain better than I can :D |
he doesn't have an EG he has a EF. the EF you just wait till you get a blank in the blinks for a second and then count from then till a blank again and recount as it can give more then one code. if the same number repeats then you only have the one code.
most likely electronic load detector which is code 20. i had this problem not long ago. if you look on the side of your ECU, what year is it stamped on the side? if 88 or 89 throw in a 90 - 91 and it'll go away. this is what i did, a buddy of mine was telling me theres something between the 88-89 and 90-91 that are different like that. hope that helps ya out. this is the table i use for engine codes. honda engine code link |
Thanks alot. Ill try that. Ya my car already has that code thing. So im pretty sure it was flashing 20. So i shall check that ECU...
Hopefully it works.. cant wait to actually drive the danm thing.. |
the reving up and down is caused by the idle air control valve (IACV) its located on the back of the intake manifold, take it off and soak the inside with throttle body and carbon cleaner,
my car did the same thing, did that and works great now |
Cool thanks again.
For cleaning that. Is there a sensor or something. Like i dont want to screw anything up more then it already is. And im pretty sure the code that its flashing is 7 and 14... |
why is everyone saying to jump that connector??? you dont need to do that to look at the flashing light for ecu codes.. isnt that only for the newer civics? that connector is for timing isnt it?
|
I know i dont need to connect anything.
Its just there.... pull up the carpet and the light flash;s. I just cant wait to solve whatever problem it is. Hoping its minor. |
CHANGE THE ECU!!
my car was giving the reving back and forth with this code i needed it fixed so i could get it etested, its not the IACV. its cause of the electronic load. just find someone with one and it'll be fine. HAS to be 90-91 pm6 for a manual its manual and from an auto if its auto. try that then rip **** appart. |

Swift_chix, it is a sensor on the back of the intake manifold, right near the throttle body, pull it off (2 10mm bolts, 2 hoses, and a connector, i just undid the 2 bolts and layed it flat so the openings up, sprayed inside with the carb cleaner, let it soak for awhile, put it back in and drove, mine was really bad tho, came back about a week later, did the same thing and its been a good 2 months since its done it, it idles alot smoother now too |
Originally posted by 1PhatCX how do u figure its the ECU? i had the 88-89 pm6 in my 91. the 90-91 in the 91 car made it fine, the under the hood fuse panel has some sensor on the corner of it and this messes up when you mess the 2 years?? i dunno why but its what it is. also as it gives code 20 same code electronic load detector, i had code 20 swapped to 90 ecu and no more basd idling and no more codes. |
i did a mpfi swap and i put a 88 ecu into a 91 car.. i got code 20 aswell and later found out its cuz the 88-89's have the electric load detector. doesnt effect my idle or anything.. no cel either. cant see why a code 20 would do anything bad. just clean the eacv or iacv and it should solve your problem. and about the paper clip thing i just dont know why other people tell people to do it . makes no sense.

Originally posted by 89SIHATCH? thats ok cause you had a 88-89 ecu in the 89 if you had a 90-91 it would throw that code. i had it ever since i did the swap. i never see you!!:p ahh gotcha, i'd still clean the sensor tho, its got quite a few years worth of carbon build-up in it :) hehe and yea u gotta stop in sometime when ur not sick lmao, i have a couple videos i need edited too meng |
