zc engine help

will a stock transmission from a 1991 civic hatch cx fit a zc engine? or do I need a 1991 civic si tranny?

from what im told, the 91 civic si is a 1.6L , and the cx is a 1.5L , and the zc is a 1.6L

imported_187Chor 04-Jul-2007 09:50 PM

ya it will fit but u will have super long gears, if you use the si tranny ur gears will be shorter...
no point using the cx tranny ur top speed in 5th would be around 200mph at redline which u will never reach

imported_starboy869 04-Jul-2007 10:50 PM

Why is there no point?

imported_187Chor 05-Jul-2007 08:30 PM

you car will never make enough power to go that fast...

just before i did my swap last month i considered putting a zc turbo with cx tranny in my car because i wanted to make a civic that would go 300km/h and i was going to use the Si gears for 1st 2nd and 3rd so i could beat it if i want to and the dx gears for 4rth and 5th to still have good fuel economy on the highway and i would have kept the cx final drive to get that top speed . in the end i chose not to because it was a headache taking apart 3 different trannies and im not a mechanic so the labour would be pointless, in the end my car would have been as fast as if i put a gsr (mayyybe a lil faster) but at least with the gsr id have alot more room for improvement as the parts are more common.
the gears i chose would have allowed me to get to 200mph at redline in 5th, if you used just the cx tranny you would be well over 225mph at redline (**correction from my original reply**) and you will NEVER make enough power to get to that point with the zc and even if you did your car would be aerodynamically limited by the drag.....

CAN you use the cx tranny, YES...... but why would u is what im saying??

imported_187Chor 05-Jul-2007 08:43 PM

oh btw i also had a 91 crx dx in which i put the zc and in 4rth i could only get to 6000 rpm and about 190km/h and in 5th i could not get much past 4500 rpm and i actually went slower in 5th than 4rth.. i only got up to 180 km/h...
but i will admit it with my lightened flywheel it was superquick in the first 3 gears and a rocket in 4th on the highway....

the reason why i want to use the cx tranny is because i just put a new clutch in it, and it will save me money if the cx tranny can bolt up to the 1.6 sohc zc. im not trying to break any speed records here, i just want to swap because my d15 is garbage and has very high km.

imported_187Chor 05-Jul-2007 10:21 PM

go for it

imported_janz3n 07-Jul-2007 08:45 AM

if you want good fuel milage go with the cx. if you want to get the most power out of the engine go with the si . personally i would be just fine with the cx because i have a dx and with 5 gear wouldnt rev to 4 grand when im going 140. any higher would suck. and im not a speed freek but i do like a little more power.

is there anything else i will need for this swap? like extra parts or anything? i might buy a 91 si tranny but im not sure, because i already have a good tranny and the money i could use for the si tranny i could use on something else, like a catback or headers. i just need advice so things kinda run smoothly :)
thanks so far.
kris

A catback is part of the exhaust system from the catalytic to the tailpipe. A Header isn't really required. Just use the one from your CX. However the ZC exhaust manifold goes 4-2-1 vs 4-1 on your CX. If you can find it I would go with the ZC downpipe (2-1 from manifold to exhaust)

Also search on how to do a DPFI to MPFI swap. Yes you can still use the DPFI intake if your hurting for cash for now. However the ZC won't run at it's full potential.

imported_autobot 07-Jul-2007 07:09 PM

what is the DPFI compared to the MPFI? i dont really know what that is lol.. i know for sure im going to need to buy a computer, but i dont know if its an OBD0 or OBD1.

imported_187Chor 07-Jul-2007 08:02 PM

who ever ur buying the motor from will give u the appropriate comp
and MPFI is multi point fuel injection which ur cx motor would not have so it needs to be re-wired for this

imported_janz3n 08-Jul-2007 03:47 PM

buddy. read up on this alot before you buy anything. from the sound of it you dont know much about the swap yet. go on honda-tech and click on the 88-91 civic/crx forum thenc lick on faq near the top and then click on dpfi to mpfi swap and theres like 6 different write ups, the 6th one is the best because its got alot of pictures. i read over the mpfi swap for a month before i did mine. it helps to do research before you get into something you dont know how to do. if you do this swap too soon i can bet your gonna be posting a bunch of threads on all your problems and your 3 hour to 3 day swap will take you a few weeks.

imported_autobot 08-Jul-2007 06:50 PM

yea i know what you mean. everytime i get reading it always ends up to reading about zc turbo setups...i will check out that link. what i do know is that im getting my engine from Tiger Japanese Auto parts, has anyone delt with this company before? good / bad ?

imported_janz3n 08-Jul-2007 09:26 PM

thats where im gonna buy my sohc zc hopefully next month. they seem pretty good. never heard anything bad about them. and there pretty cheap.. $501 with tax

imported_autobot 08-Jul-2007 10:48 PM

thats the one im pickin up too, i'll let you know how its like there.

imported_teaelle 09-Jul-2007 02:03 AM

it works but i prefer to go for a DX instead, it would be a huge upgrade from CX, and not necessary for Si coz they are hard to find at a good price

imported_janz3n 09-Jul-2007 06:52 PM

well im planning on getting mine next month.. so if you got yours in before then ya let me know thru pm please.
