Yelping Sound - Need help diagnosing
Car: 2000 Honda Civic
Engine: D16Y7 Mileage: 151K This problem is intermittent (yelping sound), it usually happens when the engine is cold or not up to temperature. It seems to be in-gear related though I'm not sure on that one. The sound is the loudest between 2700-3000 rpm. Below or above that I don't hear it. I've tried popping the hood and revving the engine to hear it but I don't hear anything. What are your thoughts? I'm thinking a pulley bearing. I'm also kind of worried because it has been doing this for awhile and I'm afraid of serious engine damage (though I have a spare). Otherwise she runs like a champ. Always starts, runs and gives good gas mileage. |

you're gonna have to explain better than a yelping sound...
so its constant but is the loudest at 3K? Yet you cant re-create it at idle |
It's hard to describe. It's like "Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" but higher pitched and it sounds a bit distorted. I don't hear it at idle. I can't recreate it when revving the car when I have the hood up. I hear it the loudest at around 2700-3000 when I am letting off the throttle. It also doesn't matter which gear I am in either.

I had a problem sort of like this before....
the little black box like thing that your pvc valve connects to was clogged. I dont know if thats your problem but maybe it could help! |
check your power steering man
|
There is fluid...I checked yesterday...Not sure what else. Anymore help?

ya but check your ps belts and pullys
because that was what was wrong with my car and then I changed the belts and tension pully and it was gone |
I agree with DumbasSi, just take the puppy out and if you have a hot g/f tell her to take her puppies out too! j/k lol
it honestly sounds like pressure under the cap from a clogged pcv valve or that box behind it! |

either way.. if it was a tensioner/idler pulley or a belt you would be able to re-create it at idle or by revving the motor in neutral.
I honestly would have to hear the noise to know where to start.. but since I can't I would just recommend checking all rotating assemblies. You sure its not more of a humming? |
I'll try going with my camera and see if I can record it...

Am I the only one thinking tranny related??? I don't have enough details on whether it is, but it's just a thought. Bad bearings in the tranny sound kinda like that sometimes. If you got a buddy who runs an emissions dyno, give him $20 to get you on the dyno, recreate the sound, then abort the test before it completes (I dunno if you can just run the dyno w/o the e-test starting, but I know you can abort it).
|
I thought about that as well B.. I guess it could be a pinion bearing, last resort, jack the car up block the rear tires and drive the car, see if you can re-create the noise. A stethoscope and a friend will be real handy..

check ur alternator belt sometimes it will make noise sometimes not - if its loose u know thats it. tighten it up see if that works
