Is it worth it to TURBO a D15 motor?
I wanted to do this last year, but setteled with a ZEX kit instead.
Now, its tempting me to do the damn thing again. It would be Turbo charging a 93 DX motor, 155000 Kms, in outstanding condition. Motor has already seen 4 tanks (55 shots) of nitrous, and now that the kit is off for 4 months (legal issues), it still pulls very strong. Mobile1 motor oil, Formula1 filter, Platinum Plugs, Ultra94 octan have being in use, ever since I bought the car. Now I found a complete homemade kit, with a T25 and all other stuff for around $1500. Its got all the lines, Vortec FMU, BOV, Front mount Intercoler, and everything. Not sure about the engine management though... Seller has to let me know. I assume its check-valves, or the best it comes to, MISSING-LINK. So there we go. Is it worth to TURBO a DX motor for around $1500 ?? Any thoughts or comments would be greatly appreciated. |
Sounds like a bit of fun for $1500.
Totally worth the money consider that is about as much as a decent header and a good (read: expensive) cat-back system |
yes, it's worth the money, but KNOW that you will need a low-restriction exhaust to make the most of the turbo.
|
Yes bbarbulo. I would be looking into a custom catback exhaust system. Probably 2.25 or 2.5 inches.
What about reliability? Do you think the setup would be stable enough, so I know the car wouldn't give me truobles every now and then? |
if done correctly to a mild 6-7 psi system, you'll get a plenty good kick in the arse in the hp dep't, and reliability will not be affected except for synthetic oil changes.
|
Hey I just thought of something:
This Turbo is off a 6Gen Coupe Si. Now, would the downpipe bolt right onto the cat-converter of my 5Gen DX? Is the lenghts the same? |
if it's the right price... you can just get the downpipe modded, or a new one made. :shrugs: I really don't have the slightest clue if you can interchange to be honest, and frankly, I don't think anyone here will know cuz it really depends on where the turbo is positioned in this kit.
|
Turbo is positioned with the compressor wheel facing driver side fender. So the downpipe would depart from the exhuat housing of the turbo, and go straight, with no bendings, to the cat-converter....
|
One more thing.
Does the oil pan of a 6Gen Si fit my motor (5Gen DX)? I don't believe so...... |

ya, but after a hard run, and no turbo time dino-juice likes to bond to the metal in the bearing... so it's best to run synth cuz it resists thermal breakdown way better than the other crap.

how much boost can you safely run in a D15 motor? And what type of turbo is suitable for this?
|
Well you could run 5-6 psi safely. Anything over that, it would be just a matter of time, until the motor can't put up with it and blows up!
A nice, SMALL turbo is good for a tiny motor like D15 or even D16VTEC. So say a T25 or a small T3. You don't have enough exhuast gas to spool-up anything bigger than these 2 I'm very unsure if I should go ahead with this project. I'm gonna push the car really hard, as I do know and I know Boost and SMALL Honda motors don't love each other that much. Can someone help me make up my mind? BOOST......? or good old HONDA reliability? Car is a daily driven, treated like a baby, and really giving all its got! (Meaning that I take everything it has to offer!) |
What about fuel pump, fpr, injectors, egt gauge, boost gauge, custom exhaust, boost controller, and install?
The fmu requires a high pressure pump and larger injectors to run what I know. Just do it man, give your honda some torque. |
Well everything needed is already in this home made kit.
There is a fuel pump, FMU and everything else. I'm gonna meet with the seller and see if I will grasp the idea from there or not.... |
just do it... it sounds to me like you have your **** straigh, and from now on, you won't have to take everythink she's got cuz you'll actually make some torque  which IMO may actually help the car last! DO IT!!!
|
Alright!
I'm gonna boost it! Lets have a bit of fun! Thanks all, especially bbarbulo for the comments! |
