I'm sure you have done the searches -- there are so many posts that mention rubbing.
Here are your options, as I see them:
Get the rims. Make sure the offset is correct.
Get the rims. Get a camber kit.
Get the rims. Roll the fenders.
If you do one or more of these things, it may make the difference between rubbing and not. Problem is the wheel well on the ol' EG is slightly smaller than the EK.
In my experience, most car enthusiasts are Type A about their cars. If they are not perfect, it drives them nuts. Me included. Even the chance of rubbing persuaded me to go another route. Other guys in the club, too. If you go the 17 route, and you do the corrections suggested, you may not rub. It all depends on how much (and how much money) you want to put up with. I'm hoping it works out because I want 17s so badly. One other thing you should remeber is that they are slow compared to 14, 15, and 16s.
Good luck. I know it's difficult, but be patient.

I drive a 99 Civic Sedan.....OE 14" tires. I am thinking of increasing the size of the tires to maybe 16", but I don't want to mess up my tires by rubbing or anything else. Is there a safe size I can go up to without making any modifications to the car itself?

ive got 215/40/17 and i dont rub.....but if i have 3 people in the back...the tire touches the rear fender lip when i go over a bump....but that is because of the 215's ( now if i rolled my lip, it would never touch ).....and 205's looks skinny to me IMO....
205's with 17'ers must be alright........
