wierd noise when i let off of gas..grinding

hey guys i have a 98 si coupe.
i can be driving at 100 and let off of the gas, and my shifter sounds like its grinding....it makes a wierd noise, as soon as i hold it and kinda of move it slighty within its gear - it stops, as soon as i apply brakes it stops.
it doesnt happen often, but at least once or twice on a 25 min. ride.
i at first thought it was something else loose rattling around in my car, buts its gotten worse...
it just sounds like its grinding metal.....

you guys got any info? is it something i should get look at right away?

Is your shifter hitting the exhaust system?

It's probably the shifter bushing that is bad causing excessive play and making that kind of grinding noise.. Really I am sure its just vibrating from the excessive play. Do you notice that your shifter is loose going left to right even when its in gear? If you get an Energy Suspension shifter bushing kit it would probably fix it up Performance Improvements sells it 1180 Kennedy Road

1st check your engine mounts, if those are okay it's possible there is internal damage to the tranny. when engine breaking the load on the tranny changes, therefore its possible to hear problems within the tranny only on engine braking and not during normal driving. placing your hand on the shifter is really bad for the tranny also, as it places additional load on the gears so stop doing that. if you diddle with the shifter a lot while a gear is engaged (like if you are one of those ppl who likes to rest their hand on the shift ****) that would explain the odd damage to the tranny.

no...i dont rest my hand on the shifter , b/c i know that it isnt wise. it does have alot of play even when in gears. but i thought that wasjust a honda thing b/c my old crx was like that and i test drove alot of ek's b4 I bought my own. and like iwas saying....i dont play with my shifter, but when it does make that noise ( only when I let off the gas) i move the shifter abit in its gear ( b/c its got alot of play ) and the noise goes away.
so i'm just wondering what it is ..and what ishould do!

yeah it's bad.... remember, the shifter on a honda is a rod connection directly to the shift forks basically, so you are putting pressure on the gears.

as for the noise going away when you put pressure on the shifter, it COULD be the linkage hitting something, but it's more likely that the pressure y ou put on the gears is transferred to the bearing, thereby reducing noise. kinda like a wheel bearing quiets down during a turn.
