Why only one wheel spins when accelerating?
I got stuck in the snow today on a sidestreet...after rocking the car back n forth 200 times i got out...but anyways...the right wheel was stuck in a big snow pile and the left one was ok...but with my luck ONLY the right wheel was spinning
when does the left one spin and what controls that?
educate my newb-***

ahhh....so the wheels can detect resistance...thats the answer i was looking for
So when I launch off a green light...the resistance on each wheel is the same so they would both spin?
I should read a book :working:

It's called a differential.
I'm sure you car has an "open" differential and that allows one wheel to spin when the other is stuck. The reason for a differential is so that the wheels can turn at different speeds when turning. It is a little difficult to explain over the internet. If you are at a meet and want an explanation, look for me.

P.S. LSD stands for Limited Slip Differential (or "posi") which is just that, it limits how much difference (slip) there is in rotation between the rotating wheels.

I was just thinking about this situation earlier. Good read. Now I know why my car always pulls to the right when I'm accelerating from a stop on icy/snowie roads.
