Why I think K & N Filters are over-rated

Ever see that very convincing display at Canadian tire or Performance Improvements, where a ping-pong ball is blown up in the air with a K & N filter element compared to a stock paper element? Sure the K & N filter element seems to blow the ball significantly higher than the paper one, BUT, they usually don't put much K & N Oil on it! Some displays have NO OIL on it!

This is cheating!

Go and see for yourself.

I bet that the K & N filter can perform better or worse than a paper filter, and that only depends on how much oil you place on the filter. If you follow their instructions, they recommend quite a bit of K & N oil on it!

Anyone aggree?

I haven't seen the display .. but I have cleaned the filter off of oil and ran that once just to see if there was a difference and there didn't seem to be... when you take the oil off (properly) the filter will be as white as a clean paper filter ... ussually I see them in those displays as red filters red being the oil used

The reason why the K&N filter flows better is because they have pin size holes in the filter that you can see, if hold up to the light. Only filters about 30% of dirty and large dirty. Just put pin size holes in your stock filter and get the same effect or use thin clothes to wrap the intake inlet.... like the pro drag cars

Sounds weird, but ever wonder why it flows better then stock?

Nova_Dust: it push the air through the filters in a comparison test, it blows the ping pong up into the air.

Well, you're sort of right, but sort of wrong. The displays with the ping-pong ***** can be adjusted or rigged to make certain filters look better than others.

I was at the SEMA show two years ago and we found out that Holley (who had the same type of ping pong display) was comparing their filters to a K&N one, but the K&N filter had been coated with hair spray!!

The fact is that the K&N filters are designed to filter down to 5.5 microns with a 98% efficiency. This exceeds SAE standards, and is comparable to a very good paper filter. However the air flow is higher than paper, and doesn't degrade over time. Paper filters begin to degrade their flow almost immediately after installation and continue to degrade.

A practically clogged K&N filter will outflow and outfilter almost any other brand new filter.

I don't think the gains you get from a K&N drop in are worth the cost of the filter. What is the average hp gain from the K&N 1 maybe 2 hp for a $70 filter? I'm sure there is an improvement somewhere but not enough to warrent the cost.

my ghetto idea

I've found large cylindrical paper filters that Crappie tire sells for under $10. Since I've a larger surface area with these filters, I think I can rig up a cheap open ended air filter to the intake pipes...

Certain filters are wayyyy cheaper than others. Just go there, an peek into the boxes and you'll see what I mean...
