Wheel Bearing Toast....Need help!!!

So my right front wheel bearing is now growling and moaning at me....quite a bit...feels like driving on gravel.

Just wondering if anyone will come help me do both my front wheel bearings this saturday.....

If anyone has done it before and is willing to give me a hand that would be great!! If not....I guess I'll manage....lol.

I live bout an hour north of the city (north of markham).

I'm gonna print out the DIY for this as well.

Any help, suggestions would be great.

Thanks...peace out!

you have a press?

zeeman 20-Apr-2007 12:29 AM

anyone whos ever replaced a wheel bearing will prolly not wanna come help you do it....especially for free.

Try to have fun with the rusty crusty c-clips.

imported_username 20-Apr-2007 10:33 AM

Don't you have to press the bearing into the hub?

imported_chris_v2 20-Apr-2007 06:41 PM

^^ yes..

but they're are plenty of other ways around it if you dont have a press..

either way I doubt anybody will show, wheel bearings are ****ty jobs

VTEC_Thunder 21-Apr-2007 12:10 AM

Looks like I'll be going at it alone....s'ok....I've managed to teach myself how to fix just about everything else...lol.

Guess I'll just roll up my sleeves and dig in!.....

Haha nice whell then you can help me with mine when they go out :)

VTEC_Thunder 23-Apr-2007 10:49 PM

Honestly, I took the spindal off and took the hub to a guy I know who has a shop and he was able to press the bearings in and out for me no problem.

Put it all back together....good to go.

If you have a press or you know someone available who has a press....your laughin.

Toughest part was getting the axle bolt off...had to heat it up and use the impact gun...

The old bearing....it literally fell apart in my hands...

imported_chris_v2 24-Apr-2007 05:15 PM

no wonder you said it was easy cause you did the easy part. lol

VTEC_Thunder 24-Apr-2007 09:52 PM

Hey...if I had a press, I would have pressed it out myself...

I watched him do it......it's not rocket science.:shrugs:

imported_chris_v2 24-Apr-2007 10:41 PM

i thought you were gona do it without a press.

and just because its not rocket science doesn't mean its fun to do

Hey Mikey what did your toasted wheel bearing sound like exactly? I am getting a sound that I think could be the wheel bearing but I dunno it could just be tire noise and I find it hard to tell

1niceSi 26-Apr-2007 01:31 PM

This week, I thought I had the same problem...wheel bearing, but when I went to see my mechanic, he said if my problem (noise) had been a bearing when you turn either left of right, you'd hear a loud drone sound, because the bearings are under pressue when you turn vs. when you're driving straight ahead.

In my case, its my tires. Because I have 17s, a 1.8 drop and no camber kit, my tires have "feathering" on them, where one side of the tire has high and low spots...resulting in the noise.

I bought OEM wheel bearings, so if anybody needs them reading this thread, PM me.

The first thing I noticed was months ago when driving on gravel or roads with alot of small bumps, I could hear a thump-bumping sound and I could feel it through the car. So I put the front end off the ground and wiggled the front wheels. Drivers side was all tight. Passenger side would move. Looked in from behind and wiggled the wheel and I could see the axle and wheel moving but the spindal stayed put.....ie: wheel bearing is toast.

So since it wasn't grinding or roaring, i've kept driving on it (couldn't afford to replace it at the time) until just last week it started moaning and grinding all of a sudden. Limped the car home, realized I could move the wheel while the car was sitting on the ground and decided it was time to fix it. I'm doing the other side as well because i've been driving with one broken wheel stud on the drivers side for over a year now and you have to press the hub out anyways to replace the stud.

btw, the old toasted bearing pretty much fell apart in my hands....kinda scarry....

I never said it was fun to do but I do enjoy fixing my own car, especially when it's fixing a part i've never fixed before.

So who wants to come help be do my timing belt and water pump??? Anyone???:D

You probably hit it right on the nose. I have 17's with around the same drop. I remember looking at my tires and I had some feathering as well. In any case i am still going do a quick check of my wheel bearings and see if my lugs are still tourqued down ok as well as my rims being seated on the hub properly.

When you say you could feel it through the car do you mean through the floor board? Because when I come to a stop I can hear and kind of feel a thump on the driver side right where the foot rest is.

^^ dude just jack the car up and give the front end an overlook.
