whats wrong with my tranny?

ok so I'm driving regularly.. put it in 1st and its fine until I reach about 3000 rpm. thats when the noise starts. its not metal against metal but definitely some sort of contact. some days it sounds like a 'wobbling' contact. shift into 2nd and between 1.5k-2500 rpm its silent, then the noise starts again. I also hear the same the noise in neautral.. just not as loud and fast.

so its definitely from the transmission.. but not sure what's wrong. I hope I dont need to replace the clutch. could it be a broken clutch spring?.. pressure plate problem or something?

I have driven the car very hard.. so I know there is some wear on the tranny. any suggestions on how should I diagnose?

illmatic.... damn man, it's been so long

either way, it will involve tranny removal - so clutch or not, the tranny has to come out. It sounds as though you have a bad bearing, but which one is hard to say. PM BOND007 and ask him to recommend a tranny shop that will take care of you.

being rpm based could it not also suggest something engine related??

I think it's the release bearing..

From the description you provided it seems very much like the sounds outta my bro's crx.. At idle you hear it, the tranny seems louder. Then while driving after a certain rpm, all of a sudden the tranny is much louder and sounds kinda rough..

Have someone push in the clutch @ idle and listen to hear if that sound dissapears.. That way you'll knwo it's not the engine..

Umm...try this: have the car at a stop (with handbrake engaged if you so desire), then put the shifter into neutral. Press the clutch (release the clutch), then release the clutch (let it engage). If you notice that it is louder with the clutch engaged, then it would be your input shaft bearing(s) fried. I have the same problem.

PLUGGING LEADS TO BANNING...just a warning, this time
also, yer sig makes me wonder too...if it's advertising for a company (and it looks to be) please remove it...thanx

ryanhook had that problem as well, and it got louder during acceleration.

yea bbarbulo.. still kickin around..

thanks for the feedback guys.. I will look into it.

what causes this bearing to go? natural wear and tear, hard shifting, bad shifting?? I will look it up in my trusty 'cars for dummies'

having the car idle for long periods of time, keeping the clutch in at red lights... things like that all add to wear and tear... or just plain ole city driving.

Umm...once you got the problem, try to avoid long drives, high RPM, or anything else that will heat up the tranny unnecessarily.

But...DO NOT change your driving STYLE. By this I mean if you push the car hard by flooring it untill you reach a desired speed, or other things.

The reason for this is that your engine and tranny break in a certain way depending on your driving style, and changing the driving style will in most cases accelerate the wear on components.

Note: this only applies to regular driving, and NOT racing. You can still floor it and drive the car hard, but just follow the two rules I said in the beginning and you'll be fine for several months.

After a few months the input shaft will break. What will happen is the shaft will get siesed as the last of the bearings disappear and the tranny housing will heat up and "become one" with the input shaft, and then SNAP!!! Driving at high RPM and then comming to a stop will cause this. When you rip apart the tranny, you'll notice that the break will be so clean that you will swear the (now two pieces) were factory-made.

Anothing way this thing that can happen is that the input shaft can break due to the vibration because (the lack of) bearings creates space for the shaft to wobble around in. Driving "nice" will do this.
