The blocks changed from gen to gen, as did the numbers after the code. Get one that uses the same OBD type as your buddy's receiver car. Also, use the same tranny as would have originally come in the car, ie. hydro or cable. All B series will generally bolt up to all B series trannys and mounts and heads. Just depends on what the easiest combo for your car is...the 1.8L non-VTEC motor you refer to has been in existance since 1992 or 1994 right up to 2001. 1996 was the OBD change to OBDII, so the ones prior were OBDI. B18A are the early blocks with cable trannys, and B18B are the later blocks with hydro trannies. For greater power output use GsR drivetrain, including tranny cause it's stronger. Also, use a B16A head since it flows better than a B18C head. Have the block machined to accept the new head, so the oil passaged match up, and have oil injectors put in to cool the piston skirts. Best to use a ported and polished GSR oil pump, or if you can afford it a TODA or Spoon oil pump. Also get ARP head studs and a ITR head gasket. There is so much more you need, I can't go into detail. If you don't have experience with this, go to Leitner and Busch to have this engine built, or visit the old one at Endyn (look it up on the net). Good luck. By the way, some of the things I suggest are for longevity, like the oil pump and oil squirters, but you can get away w/o them (for a few thousand clicks).
