what ta do..

got tuner studs..
one broke, another is spinning (but tight)
how do i remove the rim??

btw..rear so even if i pull the center cap i'll still need to remove the dust cap

only thing i can think to do is maybe drill a hole in the backing plate and weld the stud to the hub (which means if this happens again i'm screwed) or somehow get the dustcap off w/o screwing my $500 dollar rim, removing hub and weld then... hopefully the drum comes off at the same time.....

I think I have an Idea but I have to see what I'm working with here befote I give my lame brained Idea.. (that just might work)

thanks dude ..

Whiplash 11-Sep-2004 07:24 PM

actually, screw it, on my way to snap shots now..

shytty, can't get my cam to read..shyt outta luck :(

KAMUFI 11-Sep-2004 08:24 PM

big friggen problem you have to drill out that lug nut its probably the only way just make sure the rim is bolted on so you can hold drill straight. do it with a small drill bit first then progressivly work the drill bit up to lug nut size

imported_Torrey 11-Sep-2004 08:32 PM

Looks like you gotta drill....

:(

imported_gatherer 11-Sep-2004 10:27 PM

his studs are pretty long...Marty how much of the stud comes up past the lug nut? can you get a wrench on the lug not (not a socket, just a wrench

punkindrublic 11-Sep-2004 10:36 PM

good ol vise grips?

or

if you aren't keeping the stud... which i dont think you are... just weld a nut onto the end of the loose stud and try to use two wrenches maybe to get the lug off?

thats if i'm understanding the problem correctly :shrugs:

Whiplash 12-Sep-2004 08:59 AM

studs are 2.5" in length roughly.. about 1.5" exposed past lug nut
J, the wrench idea is good, but as you point out me dunna thinx i have the room to get at it...note too these are the kyokugens (7 sided)

looks like i either drill or track myself down a new backing plate

thanx guys, as always - appreciated!!

man thats rough... basically you want to get the loose stud out though right?

imported_gatherer 12-Sep-2004 08:47 PM

sweet I think you can do it.. get 2 nuts that fit on the studs.. put them on the end and tighten them together then use them for leverage to turn the lug nut loose with a wrench...

get what I'm saying Marty? or do I need to draw a picture?

mattharper 12-Sep-2004 08:51 PM

same thing happend to me, the stud was spinning. had to torch it off, but i didnt have volks:( goodluck bro

Whiplash 12-Sep-2004 08:53 PM

ya, i get yer meanin' J..
i'll have to get vice grips or sumtin' tho as a wrench won't fit...
i'll give it a shot tho!!

again, thanx tons guys!!

(ya Matt, me thinkin' torch against OZ would be a baaaaaad thing :D )

punkindrublic 12-Sep-2004 08:57 PM

if you get a good set of vice grips and just reef them on you should be able to spin the stud out i think.... if anything take a die grinder to the stud to remove the threads and creat two flat spots for more contact area

Whiplash 12-Sep-2004 09:02 PM

don't wanna spin out the stud, need to spin off the nut... :D
one is broken, another is spinning on the splines
once the rim is off i can beat the busted one and the shyt one out with a hammer

imported_gatherer 12-Sep-2004 09:04 PM

try my method Marty should eb less damageing

bbarbulo 12-Sep-2004 11:56 PM

Cut the backing plate off and replace it (parkway should have one for about $30 or so) then take a grinder and cut off the back of the stud, and pull it out through the front. ez as pie, and not even close to the face of the rim.

Or just tack it in place, remove the lug, then grind the weld and replace the spinning stud. BTW... how in the hell did you break ARP studs??
