i like how alot of people dont even read their owners manual... not saying people posting in this thread dont im just saying in general.. but ya i was supprised when i read that my d15b2 took 91 octane or higher. so iv been using 91 ever since. may be a ****ty engine but id rather use the recommended octane level. oh and another thing the manual says is to put the car in 1st gear before you shift to reverse.. i love it when people post about reverse grinds ...

my owners manual for my 95 civic says to use 86 octane or higher. Theres only 1 place i've ever seen 86 octane and it was at a sunoco in cincinnati, ohio, where i used to live.

actually using our lil friend the annuity formula, over 40 years... $200 per year would result in $25,367.95, assuming 5 % interest rate.

allow me to demonstrate.

{200 * [(1.05)^41 - 1] / 0.05} - 200 = $25367.95

that is all, carry on

Isn't gas dictated by how much compression ratio your car has? Using premium gas on a car with a small engine like a D16Z6 won't make much difference because the engine doesn't warrant high octane.

Higher octane - For higher compression engines.

Lower octane - For regular engines that are not high hp.

$200 devided by 365 days in a year is only $0.55 a day more that you would spend on premium gas.
How about cigarettes, $9 a pack, a pack a day, thats $63 a week or $252 a month just to kill yourself a little bit. Or $3276 a year.
Beer maybe? $35 a case, a case a week thats $140 a month just to have a few beers everyday.
Now imagine what you would spend on beer and smokes over 40 years.
Life is filled with expenses, get used to it. You gotta pay to play.
I wouldnt want to play with my health. I rather use at that money that was wasted on garbage (beer, cigarettes) and use it on my car

Yes, higher octane gas is used to prevent detonation. But you should always go with manufacter specs.. but if I didnt detonate.. i'd always run lower octane just because its not hurting anything.

well if my manual said to use 91 or higher i think id rather not take the chance and just use 91... what does your manual say?. its kinda like using a spark plug with the wrong gap size in your car when your manual tells you what the gap size should be. why would you use the wrong gap size... except in the case of gas you can still use 87octane and not hurt you car.
