What Oil To Use When Going Turbo
 

Hi guys.
I wanted to ask what would be a good oil to run in a turbo d-series. I know to run synthetic but what grade?
Reason i ask is because at a recent workshop, one guy mentioned that 5w30 would be way too thin for a turbo application. What about 5w50?
I need this cleared up, because I have about 6, 4 litre bottles of 5w30 and 5w50 sitting in my room. Dont want to use them if they wont be any good.

I have used 15w50 and 10w30 on my turbo D... 1 summer of each
10w30 feels better, but others may have different thoughts.

Any1 Else?

I have been using Mobil 1 5W30 for 3.5 yrs and
110 000 kms on the turbo,240 000 on the engine. My mechanic prefers 10W30 for the summer. I don't do a lot of hard driving (I am a commuter), so I am comfortable with the 5W30.

10w30 royal purple.

I like to use 5w40 Motul 8100 great stuff:thumbup:

If you're using regular oil right now.. I would recommend using a heavier synthetic oil, I would go with 10w40. If you go with a thinner oil it might cause leaks because the viscosity of the oil may be to low so it may seep through some cracks.

Myself, I am using regular 5w30 right now (NA) but when I put on my kit I'm going to be using 10w40 Mobil1.

I notice you are running an EL so I assume it is a Y8 and I have heard from a number of people whose opinion I trust that synthetic oil is not a good choice for a VTEC head I would use a non-synth oil, but as to what grade that I am not sure.

10W-40 motul is good. It is good for Turbo cars. My boss told me that.

any thin oil will run like water and might start leaking on ya.. best bet is to go with a thicker oil. I would go with 10w40.. or even 10w30 for colder weather..

Seems like most people recommend 10w30 or 10w40.
But two more questions. The turbo I have is dual ball bearing. Don't ball bearing turbo's use a very small amount of oil, as opposed to regular bearing turbos?
And in that case, would it really matter if im using a thinker oil?
Secondly, is 5w50 thicker then 5w30? If so couldnt i use 5w50, or would you still recommend the 10w30?

regular 10w30 is fine. No need to buy expensive oil.

I would stay with 5w40 synthetic Motul, it will give you a nice low viscosity in the cold/start up and the thermal protection of a 40 weight. If burning/or leakage is an issue then you can go to a 10w40 but stay synthetic whatever you do. During the summer I go as high as 20w50 but synthetic only. :cheers:

you don't have to go full synthetic.. you can use premix (i believe that's what it's called)

Sythetic does have a high temperature rating.. but if you are boosting a used engine that has been using 5w30 all it's life.. you might have some leak issues. Just don't go too thin. And watch out for leaks.

Is it a fresh build? or a used engine?

ive also heard it is better to run regular motoroil than full syntehtic on turbo cars.

This is a used engine (150k), and it will be a mild boost application. Not looking to make any more then 200hp. Hence why im sticking to all stock components for now.
I bought the car at 120k, and I have been using 5w30 synthetic since then, I have no clue what was in it before, I'm assuming regular.
But I also have 5w50 in the room. Thought it would be good. Low viscosity for start up, and 50 weight for when things get heated up. Or is this the wrong mindset?

I would probably save the 5w50 for warmer weather, what brand are you using? Do not boost your if your worried about leaks :cheers:
