Question What is that noise? "over crank" at start up

Hi all.

You know when the car is in ignition, and you accidentally turn the key over again and it makes that "eeeeee" sound? I have been getting that sound just at start up, the car isn't even cranked over yet.

Does that mean the starter needs to get replaced? I think the starter and alternator are about, and close to 90,000km usage and my original battery, is about 175,000km.

Thanks for the help.

oh, that doesn't sound good.......... Is your flywheel (flex plate if you have automatic)

edit: hopefully is the spine gear from the starter.

what happens is when your car is currently running and you try to crank it, the starter shaft will try to spin the already spining flywheel and cause your teeth to grind on the flywheel itself.

Sometimes if you buy a used flywheel and the teeth are worn down it may happen.

Not much you can do on startup tho, just have to crank it and hope it catched the teeth right on.

Flywheel is used, and it came with the motor. I don't know how "used" it was already.

Will this damage any other engine components? Aside from a not-so-fresh flywheel.

Thanks

Nope. It'll just damage the flywheel and starter.

I see. Thanks.

It happens like, once every 3 months or something, not often at all. But I was wondering what that was.
