What engine mod next?
Ok everyone...I just installed a header on my 1998 coupe....so I have header/exhaust/intake. Im getting a high flow cat next....but then what? Its D series by the way.
then maybe an aftermarket intake manifold.
Don't waste your money on an adjustable fuel pressure regulator or any of that MSD crap. How's the clutch? Maybe get a better clutch and a lightened flywheel. Or a cam and adjustable cam gear, possibly some valve springs and titanium retainers. All depends on your budget. |
upgrade your ignition. Most bolt-ons do very little on d-series engines.
well, after my high flow cat...I was gonna get AEM cam gear and AEM pully kit...hows that?
don't waste your money on a pulley kit or ignition mods. Unless you plan on using n20 in the future b/c you need an ignition cut available on MSD's and stuff....but otherwise its useless, honda's ignition systems are good for any sort of n/a application and even lightly boosted ones.

I thought ignition upgrades would be a decent investment, but I suppose yours is fine? Thanks for clarifying that zeeman. |
so your saying just get an aftermaket intake manifold? Is OBX good?
Also, Im not too good w/engine tech and all that so can u guys clarify what are valve springs and titanium retainers and cam...and what exactly do they do?
well the camshaft is what essentially controls the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves (which let air into and out of the engine).
A valve spring is what snaps the valve shut tight after it opens. And the retainer is what holds the spring in its place. Aftermarket camshafts usually require the use of aftermarket valve springs and titanium retianers, well anything more that just a stage 1 that is. Well honestly, i think i would upgrade the clutch next and get a lightened flywheel while you are at it. |
how much boost would you say stock ignition is good for zee
So If I decided to do those next three mods, I would have to do them all at once?(retainer, valvespring, camshaft)
stock honda ignition can easily support 300 WHP.
beyond that... well I know two guys running individual coil packs. |
thanks B good to know, one thing off my list :D
I run OEM everything except for plugs. For plugs, I use NGK BKR7E. Beyond that, I would go for inividual coil packs as well, they have been tested at over 1000 hp.
link to individual coil packs?
well boost is different, an aftermarket ignition system with boost timing retard is a good idea, especially if no sort of engine management is used (like on most budget turbo set up).
I agree with bruno stock is good for 300whp, but i don't know of too many n/a honda's that put out those kind of numbers. What kind of power you making bruno? I know what the setup is. 98_SI_Coupe: Yes i would recommend doing all 3 at once, there are many company's that sell kits with all 3. I would also get an adjustable cam gear. Then don't forget tuning. But i wouldn't run anything more than a stage 1 cam on stock compression. And a stage 1 cam doesn't usually require aftermarket valve springs and retainers. |
has everyone forgot about the trottle body? that is the next thing you should do, it comes right after the cai so it is the next mod inline before cam and internals.
take off the power steering belt
hey thanks for all the replies guys..Im tryin to do my research here...but not too good w/engine specs. so what will I gain w/ a throttle body and why would I take off the power steering belt?
you will gain some throttle response and a little whp with a larger throttle body. And you will gain like 1whp by removing the power steering....not worth the effort to convert to a non-power steering rack. And i wouldn't recommend taking off your power steering belt
