What Engine do I have? 1st or 2nd Gen?
Hi Everyone,
I got a question how can I tell if my engine is a 1st Gen or 2nd Gen? I just got the Car and an Engine swap was done to a JDM B16A. The engine says B16A but doesn't say one or two so i automatically assumed it was a 1st Gen. But i saw that it had the hydraulic clutch so I am thinking it's a 2nd Gen. Is there a difference in the serial on the engines if it's JDM B16A? I hope someone can help me out. I have attached a link so you can view my engine. Please and Thankyou Everyone http://www.imagestation.com/album/pi...?id=2093805472:bounce: |
correct me if i m wrong but doesnt the jdm 16a gen 1 or 2 have the same horse (170)??
but does the gen 1 have cable clutch or hydraulic clutch? |
look at the fuel rail, if its round its a first gen, if its rectangular its a second gen. Look at the intake manifold, if it says PGMFI on the top its a 1st gen, the first gen also sometimes has these hard metal vacuum lines on the top/back of them along with these weird diaphram looking vacuum things on them near the throttle body.
ALL JDM b16s say "B16A" or "B16A1"....if it says A1 then its a 1st gen.....there is no USDM 1st gen b16 so the first gens all say b16a1. You can also look at the head, there will be the year stamped on it in a little cirlce near the exhaust manifold (there are like 4 of these cirlces with numbers in them, its the first one your looking for)....it should say like "9|1" for 1991 or "9|5" for 1995. These are a few telltale signs of how to tell the b16s apart and this is clearly listed in the "performance/suspension archives". |
FIRST GEN
|
and no first gen is rated at 160 horsepower, where the 2nd gen is 169 i believe.

Also check out your TB, if it has the mapsensor on top, its a 2nd gen. 1st Gen b16 TB's had the Map sensor on the back.
Also check your head right above your exhaust manifold, if you look closely you will see Circles, with numbers in it. That is the casting yr of production. Your looking to see if its 92 and above. if it says anything under 92.... then thats a 1st gen head. Then there is also the change over yrs, which are stamped late 91 which are still 2nd gen B16's I'll see if I snap some pics for you. |
zeeman already mentioned the second part!
|
as zeeman said, the only way of truly knowing is hte build date on the head because the intakes could have been easily swapped
|
no... both gen are 160, its the jdm that is a bit more....
by the way, as the engine gets older and not well maintained, some horses dies... so you might not have 160 even if its listed at 160... and its at the crank... so at the wheels you lose about 15% of the hourses... |
this is how you tell if its gen 1 or 2 i believe.
2nd generation B16A * Grey connectors * One 4-wire O2 sensor * Hydraulc transmission First generation B16A * Milky white connectors * Twin single wire O2 sensors * Cable transmission |
Thanks for the info.
going to check my car but my car is hydraulic as from the picture i taken and shown in the link. so it can only be a second Gen. I will check the other stuff to see if also matches up. Thanks I keep posted to see what matches i hope it's the 170 horse =) :drivesafe |
