what engine can I put in?

What I want is a little more power then I have. Its a 1991 civic 4speed. I don't know what engine it (1.5) but was wondering if I can do an engine swap and see if I can put a 5spd in. I don't want to change anything else. Is that possible with a SOHC 1.5L D15b vtec ?

is this a direct engine swap. that means no wires harnesses or anything-else?

nope, the easiest swap would be a zc, or d16(88-91 si version), all you need for the swap is to convert your car to mpfi, which isnt all that bad, and you can keep the stock transmission until it blows....

zc, d16z6, b16 would be ur choice....
as long as you don't need any custom mounts, that's already consider a drop in job... you can't expect to keep all your old stuff... try to change mounts, axles, linkage while you're at the swap...

try to get obd0 motors.... make sure it comes with the obd0 ecu.....

A SOHC ZC won't bolt up to an auto transaxle?

you can keep the 4spd, but thats 1/2 the reason the engine is slower, long long gears...not ****** out more evenly then the 5spd boxes..

I suggest : sohc zc <---you can get newer even upto 97, low Kms that way, and most or all 4G civic SI parts are compatible.

try to find a SI tranny, 88-91 civic/CRX, they are getting rare, but alot of those pick and pull wreckers have some, and you can get them relatively cheap.

with that setup expect mid to low 15's in an STD model civic..

a buddy of mine did a dohc ZC swap in his 4th gen sedan, cold air intake, fuel pressure regulator (turned up Fuel pressure a bit), 2.25" exhaust stock cat , think that was it and he was running 15.6 all day at cayuga on the quarter mile. and that was his sedan not hatch. also if you upgraded to a performance header and a nice size exhaust you would be pretty happy. you dont need a monster just something with some pep and fun to drive.

if you need a SI 5spd tranny for 88-89 90-91 i got 2 lemme know

Like everybody already mentioned, a D16 or ZC (single or dual cam), are the best bang for the buck when it comes to EF civic's plus they are chep engines and you can usually buy one with a transmission for under $600, depending on condition plus they are a lot that pop up for really cheap, check the for sale section, you will find something there.

depending on what motor you go with...easiest for you would be the DOHC ZC. I think you should go with that, gives you just a little more power like you want and is the easiest to swap

d16z6 would be an even better choice, a little more work involved but still not that bad.
