what does brown smoke mean?

iv tried searching honda-tech and here with now luck. me and my buddy both have fresh zc swaps, mine is sohc his is dohc. i know what blue, white, and black smoke is but mine burns only brown smoke at wot at high rpms. (dont do this often) my buddies burns brown aswell... not to mention blue and white.but thats another story.

i think i remember reading somewhere that brown meant you are running lean but i just want to confirm this . im running a virgin pm6 with my obd0 sohc zc so maybe the zc just needs a little more fuel at higher rpms. i also have a pm7 (pm6 with a chip :( ) that i havent tried on mine cuz i dont want to wreck the engine. i used it on my stock motor for a long time.

were you in brampton when this happened?

Cynikal.Mindset 22-Aug-2007 04:12 PM

i ran a pm6 with my sohc zc with no smoke etc

imported_chris_v2 22-Aug-2007 05:20 PM

running lean won't produce brown smoke...

I have never in my career seen a car smoke pure brown smoke. I would assume maybe its rust residue from the exhaust.. Nothing burns brown really.. maybe your just colour blind dude. lol (jk)

lol.. well i am colour blind but my buddy saw it too. the same guy with the dohc zc swap. its a very light colour of brown though. im not really worried i just kinda wanted to know what its from. exhaust is about a year maybe two old, stock mid pipe. stock zc 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and a newish muffler, only really old exhaust piece i have is the axle back to the muffler. couldnt tell if my old engine had brown smoke since it was mostly blue lol.

a quick e-test should help point you in the right direction

imported_janz3n 22-Aug-2007 07:28 PM

lol.. you make it sound like anyone can go get an etest done for free. i probably could since i work at a dealership but i wont.
