Question what could cause an O2 sensor to fail?

hey, i just replaced my o2 sensor to get my emission passed... well, i know any old stuff up to a certain age needs replacement... but what things should i avoid that will lead an o2 sensor to fail? or an o2 sensor will last upto a certain age only no matter what? i just figure out little things on a car can be very costly such as an o2 sensor can be 200 bucks...

thanks... please help me build up my knowledge...

200$ for an o2 sensor??? wow, that was the price of my WIDEBAND sensor,

running rich can ruin an o2 sensor, age, or if your lucky snapping them when replacing the exhaust manifold to a header.

yup, thats how much they want for an o2 sensor.. actually honda wants 240 for one, and they cost that much becuase of the built in heater.. the cheapest place i found so far is NAPA, where you can get a NGK sensor for 115, if you have a buisness account.

$256.58 for the o2 sensor in the cat from my local dealership. Less than $200 wiht my members discount at Parkway Honda. I have been told that the aftermarket o2 sensor may cost less up front but you will have to replace tham twice as often.

I paid $90 for mine as well and it was a 4 wire NGK/NTK without the plug. Just had to use the old one. Age usually or fouling screws them up. Mine was screwed up and wasn't even throwing a code.

are the $90 bucks 4 wire NGK any good?

and 200 is the price for OEM o2 sensor + installation....

also, the rusts were a pain in the *** for my mech to do any removing and installing.... i hope $200 was worth it (i felt it did because of the pain in the installation process...)

I've had my $80 sensor in for two years. It may be getting lazy, but it still works. Some fuel additives can wipe out your sensor, too. Burning coolant, too rich, too lean. A bad O2s will lead to a bad convertor.

Been using it around 9 months now and no problems. Figure they are using NGK for spark plugs in hondas, the o2 must be ok as well...
