What is considered a tune-up?
Like my questions says. What is considered a tune-up?
Also what is a fuel filter, and what is it used for? The reason I ask this question is because my Civic which was owned by another owner previously, I have no idea on the previous history of changes etc. How much does a fuel filter replacement cost for a 93 Civic? |
i would consider a tune up to be replacing the spark plugs, plug wires, pvc, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor and air filter.
The fuel filter is located on the firewall. It has 2 lines attached to it, one coming from the fuel tank and one going to the fuel rail. It filters the fuel before entering the fuel filter. I believe they cost around $25-30 and take about 10 minutes to change. |

The previous owner drove the D15B7 until it leaked and the KM on the guage was at 180,000. Since then I got a swap: JDM D15B VTEC. But now I want to know, what things, other than on the engine,should I inspect to replace which gets old? Fuel filter is one of them, anything else? BTW: What is PVC? |
PVC is plastic piping. I mean PCV (positive crankcase ventilation). Its usually located on the intake manifold and is a little valve that needs replacing every so often.
I would also get the throttle body cleaned, change the rad fluid and tranny fluid, although i am sure that was done when the d15b was put in. I would look into replacing the timing belt and water pump, unless you did this before the d15b was put in, because you never know when the last time the previous owner changed them. |

Ya thanks guys. Right now before winter I plan to the following.
Oil Change Oil filter ATF Spark Plugs Brake fluid Air filter The dizzy is new and its wires. The coolant was done when it was swapped, new rad. I have a new question too if someone can answer please. I just got 2 1-liter bottles of ATF fluid Mobil 1. My dad said he already has the same 1 liter bottle so I could use it. I was hesitant because he said he onl used a little to top off. Anyways I heard its not good to use already opened fluid because water can get inside thus a no no. He says he had it for 2-3 months. Is it okay to use it? BTW: Does anyone know where to get the NGK ZFR6F-11? The CT near me doesnt have it, only has the ZFR5F-11. So I had to end up getting that (it will work for now, but the 6 is prefered for this engine). |
Well just great. Before I do my tune-up (scheduled for this weekend), today my car won't start!
The engine cranks, but doesn't start. Checked the spark plugs and it seemed fine, has oil around it but seems fine. Checked all the wires, none loose. I havent check the battery because no voltmeter but Ill see if I can get one to use. Hopefully its not the dizzy cuz I got that once I got the swap. Came with the engine. Any other suggestions to what could be the problem? When I turn the key to accesory mode (2), I hear the fuel pump spooling. Then I crank it but it makes the usually sehehehe noise but doesnt start. |
pull the spark plug out and attach it to the spark plug wire. Rest it on the valve cover but make sure that the electrode isn't touching anything. Then have someone crank the engine over. There should be a spark at the end of the spark plug. This is how you check for spark.
Try bump starting your car (if its a 5spd) and go to part source. They will do a charging system test (for free) and will be able to tell you if its the battery, alternator or starter. Do you have gas in the tank? |

Even though your distributor is new I wouldn't rule it out. Had my ignitor go on me and the distributor was only 6 months old. Anyway, if everything checks out .. Plugs, wires, starter,etc then I would say its your ignition coil.

If it does turn out to be the dizzy, if I get a new one I would have to check the timing correct?
If so which one would I use? I have a JDM D15B VTEC so could I use the similar USDM Si timing numbers; 16 degrees BTDC (RED) @ 750RPM? |
bump starting is where you push the car (in gear with the clutch pedal in, or in neutral if your doing it by yourself) then put it in gear and let the clutch pedal out quickly. It should jolt the car and start the engine. Its not exactly the best way to start a car, but will work.
You will need to check the timing after removing the dizzy. |
Can anyone suggest a good price average on a distributor for my car if it comes down to that?
Also which model should I look for? Can the Si model fit onto the JDM D15B VTEC? The one I have right now is the one coming from Japan. |
Are you sure the distributor is the problem? You probably wouldn't want to replace it if u didnt have to. Unless u can get a used one from a junk yard, a new/rebuilt one is at least $300+ just for the part

i would say a tune-up is something like spark plugs, wires, dist, cleaning injectors, engine flush (or a decent oil change), oil filter, fuel filter, clean air-filter, pcv valve, brake bleed, tranny fluid change, rad fluid change, p/s fluid... and inspection of brake pads...

if its the ignition coil, it can be a few hundreds... or join tcc and call parkway...
also... for a dizzy... you can rebuilt it with new cap and rotors... my old hatch... the ignitor went dead... when you try to ignite the car, you just hear clicks and no matter what you do, it just won't start... that was my exp. |

Shouldnt be more than 100 buckroos. Oh ya, damn why did I have to wait long just to do a tuneup. CRAP its snowing like mad now! I have my work cut out for me, and my dad and uncle. WHY SNOW NOW? Its freaking cold. Edit: I plan to do the spark test before looking for the dizzy. So maybe tomorrow. |
