What the $*@!

I bought a 1991 civic hatch for winter and this car ran like it's brand new. Since I just bought it I gave it a tune up, and after I gave it a tune up the car runs like ****. I changed the air filter that was really dirty, spark plugs that were bad, oil change. I didn't change the wires or dis. cap cause they look in good shape. What could of happend? Please help me.

did you check the gap on the plugs??
(shoulda changed them all at the same time..and hopefully you didn't crack them on the install..ya i've seen that happen, the ceramics can be sensitive sometimes)

did you re-set the ecm??
(might be that it's used to running within certain parameters, but now that all is good it's still running under the adaptive state it was in..compensating for the old stuff that was in it)

I was thinking it might be the gap but don't NGK platinum come pre-gapped? As the ecm (?), ecu, i dont think it needs to be reset I never do that with my other civic. Anyhow the car runs like **** when you try to move in first gear, after you get going it runs pretty good, especialy on the hiway, but when you come to a complete stop it feels like it's gonna cut off but never does. Oh I'm also getting rough starts too.

cbishun: Something like that happened to me three times, it does not happen now, and you are right, the car is fine at 40+Km/hr. You have to reset ECU, leave it off for awhile, I left mine off for one day and it was fine (make sure the connector is not touching the battery at all). I can't explain what is wrong, b/c I don't know, all I know is that it has happened to me before (3 times). I have a 2000 civic EK7.

- Does the car shake like crazy only when you are fully stoped?
- when you hit about 40km/hr the problem go alway
- Does the engine light come on?

Those are the things that happened to me. Rough starts, I can't help you with that, sorry.

yes the car shakes when it is at full stop, yes the problem goes away at 40km/hr, but no the engine light doesn't not come on. Also i never changed the plugs on this car before because i just got it. I'm gonna try to leave the battery connector off tonight and see what happens

Go to a mechanic and have them read your codes to determine the cause. Or we can play the guessing game forever. Where do you live (city) maybe I can hook you up. Usually, it cost alot of money to check the code, if you can get it done for around $30 then it is a good deal, if not then check me up.

Since this is your winter beater, I would go about trying to figure this out a little different.

Put in some regular gas and beat the F*** out of her for a good 2 hours and it should be running fine after that.

Maybe, but thats what I would do.

Before you do anything I would check the gaps on the plugs. When I buy new plugs I buy NGK ones from Canadian tire and they have never come with the correct gap.

hey whats up, you have to check the plugs at run position and pull all them out one at a time but you don't pull them out all the way, just enough were your going to hear the spark if one and thie ideling should drop a little. if it doesn't drop and hardly no spark then it's your spark plug wires, you might have to get new ones get the ngk sparkpluge wires

guy, we're talking about OBD0 here. he can read the codes himself.
the ecu is located in the passenger floor panel. check to see if it's flashing any codes.

Yeah like everybody has the reader just laying around in the garage. It's not actaully cheap, and how often do you use the reader so it is cost effective, maybe rent one out. Shaun: maybe you have one you can lend out to everyone that needs one in the future.

cbishun: check this site out for more info. http://hondata.com/downloads/romeditor25.pdf
It should have everything you need hopefully. Good luck man.

Shaun is correct. Just peel back the carpet on the passenger side, under the dash and the ECU is there with a little glass window and a red flashing light. Just count how many flashes before the pause and it repeats itself. Take that number and look it up on the net or here on this site.

Good luck!!

It could also be that the platinum spark plugs are causing all this(although I doubt it.
I'd say check your dist. and make sure the plugs are in the right order.
When you say it runs rough do you mean only when you 1st turn it on and after you hit 40 its fine or whenever you come to a stop it does the same 'till you hit 40?
By rough do you mean a popping/putting sound?
