Weird sound during hard accelleration
Hi,
Sorry for the general subject, but I can't describe it any other way. My sister's little 95 Civic CX is making a funny sound when I accelerate hard (not really hard) and the engine is under pressure.
It is most obvious in 5th, when accelerating on the highway, at about 100km/h a hissing or whirring like sound comes from underneath the drivers dash. I can replicate it in 2nd, by acclerating hard and revving higher than usual.
I can't figure out where it's coming from exactly.
Sometimes I think it's hissing, other times I think it's some small motor whirring. It sounds kinda like someone rubbing there hands together fast.
The car is a 95 Civic CX with 60,000kms on it. 5speed, stock everything (except for some winter tires).
Can anybody help me figure what this is?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Ed

No, nothing in neutral. Seems to be only when the engine is under pressure.
As for the drivers side dash vent? I think it's set to open. I was under the impression that switch controlled whether or not air came out of it or not.
The thing is, it seems to happen only at certain RPMS (high, but not rediculous) regardless of gear or speed.
Two things seem to do it:
- engine pressure
- higher RPM's
Oh, and it's a 94...my bad
Thanks for the replies,
Ed

Hey man:
That reminds me.. maybe you guys can help me out too...
cuz I use to drive my mother's Lexus RX300 around before I aquired my Civic... and when I would hit past 3000 (higher rpms during harder acceleration).. I hear a hissing sound coming from under the steering column.
I've talked to some members in TCC a long time ago and they think a vacuum tube might have blown out in the engine.. but it all seemed fine when the dealer does their routine checks.
So my old problem is VERY similar to this one.
Any ideas?
