weird popping noise today..

On my way home from school today, I heard this loud pop noise while I was driving at like 15kms/hour. Ever since my car really smells while it's running, RPM's are going up and down even at idle and it has a constant hard shake. I know it's minimal information, but if anyone has any idea what it could be and how much it is to fix it that would be very much appreciated.
It is an 88 CRX.

your PCV valve got blown out of the valve cover, and now oil fumes are stinking up the engine and making idle erratic??

just a guess.... have you bothered to open the hood??

yeah I have.
Nothing noticeable is different...I don't know how and what to check.

The car still runs...it's just really slow, and it keeps accelerating/decelerating when I am at a steady speed.

Thanks for the response Bruno, any idea how much it will cost to fix?

you have to know whats wrong with it first before you can estimate a cost.

well if that's what the problem is then you need a $10 PCV valve.... man.... to be honest, old cars are for handy ppl... if you are not really handy, driving an old car get real expensive real fast.

cuz now you gotta have someone look at it, and that'll be like $100 prolly just for an hour of diagnostics. I recommend Altech, they seem to know their 4th gens well.

Yeah, the PCV valve just came undone on the valve cover. What a relief, I thought it was going to be something expensive...that I can't afford right now because of school. Thanks Bruno, u da man

same isht man... just that the PCV is placed on the other end of the tube.

DJTre, happy I could help. You did put a new PCV in, right? Cuz a blown tube from the PCV tells me it's clogged and positive pressure from the crankcase is causing it to blow out. Get an OEM one, not the Fram kind!!!!
