Weight Reduction

Weight Reduction
Ive always heard people say weight reduction will make the car go faster. Some even say it will make mileage better. When i heard this the first thing i did was remove the paneling and rear seats out of my hatch. I like the feel of having the two seater and nobody rode in the back anyways. I was wondering if any of you guys worry about weight reduction or is is a waste of time and /or money. I know people like carbon fiber hoods/parts. But did you guys buy them for weight loss or looks?

Weight reduction plays a very significant role in the overall performance of your car. There are two parts to the acceleration formula a = Force / Mass. Force would be the power output of your car. Increasing this will increase acceleration. The other way to increase acceleration would be to decrease the mass.
So yes, weight is very important. It does affect fuel efficiency to a small degree I suppose because there is less power required to get the car into motion in the first place.
As for carbon fiber pieces, they are meant for weight reduction, but apparently its also pretty JDM :P

i think its pretty much 50-50 for the looks vs weight savings. but i saw somewhere that for every 100 lbs of weight removed will make your car 1/10 faster on the 1/4 mile. so its not much faster really. and your milage probably wont be affected to where youd notice it. back seat doesnt weight that much. imo its not worth gutting your interior

it's not about how fast you are in the 1/4 mile... overall lighter is better/faster.
less weight means less momentum. therefore you are easier on the tires, brakes, susp components; less momentum means easier to turn, brake and accelerate.
lighter IS BETTER!!! physics agree!
now, the key is... be reasonable about your car. start with something light and make it lighter. don't strip your car, then add a 40 lbs system. be consistent. no spare tire, no extra junk in the glovebox, no system, no 17 inch rims, lightweight battery, etc.
you can easily shave 30 lbs out of your car. does it mean it's worth it... hell no. the car will drive like a tin can, and look like a junkyard gem.... and you won't be noticably faster, and you won't get noticably better mileage.
what does it all mean??? get a light car to begin with and leave it alone. that's why I drive a Civic... it's light.

i stripped about 120lbs off my car. sure it's noisy but i don't mind it at all. if i wanted something comfortable then i wouldn't have gotten a civic. i bought my cf hood for weight savings. when i get my car painted i'll be painting the hood also so it's not as big of a theft magnet.

makes sense, i think EF is the smallest out of them all too. My car looks small compared to my friends EG.

Average weight reduction isn't needed unless your car is intended to be used at a track car, getting beaten on the course and you need the room for a cage, or some other things.
But that doesn't mean you can't gut everything, it is your car, do what you like.

think i saw a weight chart on honda tech a wile ago.. i dont think the eg is much heavier then the ef.. maybe a couple hundred pounds or less.. not sure though.

Why dont you just remove the entire exhaust while your at it. Less back pressure makes you faster in all forward gears. :P

make sure to take a dump before driving and only wear silk when getting into the car.
carbon fibre key should provide better performance.

Stupidest thread ever. Ya lets take out all this weight, then run aftermarket stereos. If you want to save weight, remove AC. Thats really all that makes sense, Why the **** would you remove plastic interior and FOAM with fabric over top. 100lbs out of your car is good for 1/10th of a second off your 1/4 mile. *Generally* Put your **** back in and run with a 1/4 tank of gas, thats the best way to save weight. And dont run subs. And put a cat back on your car, it's making you slower unless you're always running top end.

i have no ac, no power steering, no system, no back seats, no paneling, i think its as light as im getting lol.

Put you interior back in honestly. If you want to save weight the carpet weighs more than the seats and panels. Trust me this no interior gayness is a fad. Just like everyone wanted fart cans and clear lights. Now both are extremely gay (even though they always were).

For a daily driver, massive weight reduction isn't practical, especially if you like your creature comforts. But stripping your car is not a fad. Its proven, and it works. And its also free.
It will help your car accelerate faster, but like bbarbulo said, it increases braking, and cornering ability as well.
If you are serious about performance, and track the car often, weight reduction is an important step. Dont underestimate weight.
