waterpump leak

I am pretty sure that i have a leak in the gasket on my waterpump, or my waterpump is gone. anyways wahts the easiest way to get at it? do i really have to take the pulley off and all tat jazz? if i end up takin the pulley off who has a good solution to keep the motor from turning over while trying to loosen/tighten the pulley nut...

imported_SIR_Injected 23-Nov-2005 08:43 AM

canadain tire electric impact gun!

take off your motor mount on the left side (D) side if you got a picker lift that side of the engine up to access it better!

zeeman 23-Nov-2005 04:22 PM

theres no way around it, the crank pulley has to come off.

imported_fiercecivic 23-Nov-2005 06:25 PM

what if i cant get the impact gun on the nut, how do i stop the motor from turning over, especially when i go to torque it to spec?

zeeman 23-Nov-2005 07:16 PM

well removing it you won't have to worry because with an impact gun the engine shouldn't really turn over too much. But my 1/2" drive impact gun doesn't always do the trick.
So when that fails i either have someone jam a pry bar in between the teeth of the flywheel to stop it from spinning or sometimes the crank pulleys have little holes in them. In which case you can stick a couple of 14mm bolts through the holes and jimmy a pry bar in between the two bolts and the frame of the car to hold the crank pulley tight when removing or installing the dreaded crank pulley bolt.
Oh and if you plan on using a breaker bar/johnson bar make sure you have at least 15" of extention to get the bar outside of the wheelwell, otherwise its a real PITA to get any sort of leverage on the bar to crack the bolt loose.

My car was leaking from the water pump, but it was antifreeze so i had to replace the waterpump. I kept noticing my engine was trying to over heat.

zeeman 23-Nov-2005 08:38 PM

What else would the water pump be leaking? Tranny fluid? just playing. A leaky water pump is a definate sign that its time to replace it. If your changing the water pump you should do the timing belt as well.

imported_fiercecivic 23-Nov-2005 09:16 PM

im pretty sure its the water pump, it could be the seal around the edge. i have to rip it all apart to check it out

zeeman 23-Nov-2005 09:24 PM

man, if your rippin' it all apart you might as well replace the water pump/timing belt. There's fixing a problem for the short term and then fixing it for the long term.

imported_fiercecivic 23-Nov-2005 09:26 PM

yeh the motor only has 30 000 on it, it shouldnt need a new waterpump. but for the price of it and hassel might as well

zeeman 23-Nov-2005 09:30 PM

yeah man, just think, it won't need another one for 150,000 miles.
And you said it yourself for the price and hassle you might as well.
If it only has 30,000 shouldn't it still be under warranty from honda?

imported_fiercecivic 23-Nov-2005 09:31 PM

no its a crate jdm d15b. only had a 3 month warrenty

zeeman 23-Nov-2005 09:35 PM

oh, in which case i guarantee that it has WAY more than 30,000km on it. Maybe since you've owned it. Change that sh1t up man, i would recommend changing the water pump/timing belt right away after any swap, i actually recommend doing it before the swap while the engine is out (its much easier).

imported_fiercecivic 23-Nov-2005 10:44 PM

how can u guarentee that. its from japan auto parts, they gaurentee most of their motors with 50 000kms or less. with a 3 month waranty. BTW ive only put 6000kms on it. the emmison laws over in japan requires there to only be a certain amount of kms on the motor b4 it has to be replaced. anyways my original question is answered, thanx

haha....yeah....riiiiight
Thats just some bullsh1t importers tell you to buy their overpriced used engines.
There is NO WAY any importer can prove how many km's are on any given engine unless it came as a front clip in which case it may have the cluster in it.
You never know what you're getting with an engine from an importer, because you don't know how well the previous owner maintained it, or didn't maintain for that matter. Thats why i recommend changing the timing belt/water pump before installing a used engine. Its also a good idea to change the clutch while its out.

imported_jdm ek4 24-Nov-2005 10:08 AM

Yeah, you should always change the water pump and timing belt when you purchase a motor swap. I have had my motor swap since 98 in my ef and i changed it and still have no problems. My other friend never changed his since he got it last year and it went this year. Ever notice how every japan importers say there engines are between 30000km-60000km? IMO, I dont believe that.

zeeman 24-Nov-2005 07:08 PM

yeah i don't believe that for a second either. People will tell you anything to get you to buy something from them. Salesmen are sneaky like that.

kwikb16a2 24-Nov-2005 07:40 PM

they sell the crank pulley holder at CT now, $28 so its not too bad
