water leak advice

Hey guys hopefully this is the right area to post this in and if not sorry mods.

Anyways i have a 99civic hatch and have been having a serious water leak into my hatch/trunk.

I have taken out the spare tire and all the carpeting so its bare metal in the trunk to try and find this leak. It DOES NOT leak when the car is just sitting there at all.

It only leaks when i am driving the car in the rain or if the grounds still really wet and full of pudels. This leads me to beelive its somehow coming in through the rear tire wells or strut towers?

Has anyone ever come across this i really want to fix this water leak fast. thanks alot.

I've read that the rubber gaskets around the tail lights can leak when it rains.

imported_SaYjAiBaO 04-Aug-2006 12:26 PM

yeah it usually comes through the tail lights. mine is leaking right now through them and it pisses the **** out of me because my rear is gutted and it makes my car smell like **** the next day.

yea man the smell is seriously killing me. But my major concern is i dont want it to start rusting.

So i should go to honda and buy new gasgets for the headlights then would be my best place to start?

well how i found out was when it was raining i popped my hatch and looked for where it was leaking exactly. i'd do that first before going to honda to buy new gaskets and you end up not needing them.

luca 04-Aug-2006 12:34 PM

yea that makes sense. Ill probably try to figure it out using a hose for now though since i wanna get this over with. I really hope its just the tail light seals.

The only thing that doesnt make sense to me is that it only seems to happen when i drive the car. Not from it just sitting in the rain.

imported_SaYjAiBaO 04-Aug-2006 12:41 PM

maybe you do have rust on the inside and somewhere theres a hole where water is getting in when you drive because thats the only time water gets kicked up in that certain area.

are you guys talking about an EG hatch? Because i dont see how the water could come into my trunk through the tail lights on the EK but i could be wrong.

Also i sprayed all around the trunk as much as i could and all under the tirewells and spare tire well from under the car but no water is getting in now.

This is really confusing me.

i had same problem last year. it was taillight gaskets.
replaced for $15. if they tell u its more $, just let them know another dealer quoted this price, worked for me :)

luca 14-Aug-2006 12:49 PM

so yours only leaked when you drove the car and not just from sitting then?
It had not rained again yet so i still have no clue where the water is coming from.

I dont really see how the tail lights could cause water to come into the trunk though.

I had that problem, replacing the rear taillight gaskets fixed it. Picked them up from Honda.

I have heard that tightening your existing gaskets might solve the problem too.

home depot has this stuff called "great stuff" ...

it is a foaming sealer and i used it all around my taillights, the seams around the hatch and i havent really had a problem since. it is a real pain in the ass with EK hatches that they do that. anyway, you can also silicone around the seals of your tail lights and that should aid in solving the problem. good luck, as most EK hatch owners have just learned to deal with it.

it finally rained and it does look like the water is coming through the taillight like you guys suggested :)

so i went buy honda today and ordered the taillight gasgets and ill get them tommorow.

Hopefully just replacing them will fix the problem. i dont realy wanna have to fill it with a bunch of other filler.
