vtec question?

what are the negatives of having vtec on all the time.... i have a d16z6... i actually had it on for a bit and it idled rather rough... but i'm just curious if there any other bad thing that can come of that??

Shitty low end power, rough idle, low vacuum, overall a bad bad area under the curve. Besides, VTEC won't come on unless the ECU has seen that the engine meets all the criteria that is set out... oil pressure, water temp, VSS>x, RPM>y etc...

Fuel comsumption!!!

If you drive in VTEC all the time, ie. 5700RPM or whatever, you'll be filling up your tank more than you'd like.

And if you d16z6 is anything like mine (probably not) you might be burning some oil too.

But is sounds really nice...lol

James, I think he meant to manually switch to always ride with VTEC on no matter what the RPM.

WTF.....why would you want that?

The engine is not designed to work that way.

Based on this, I'm guessing that's what he meant.

I've gotta admit, I thought of locking the mechanisms to keep the car in VTEC all the time. Definitely do not want to engage VTEC via the solenoid before 3500rpm. Will ruin ****.
I may still throw the Z6 guts into a ported Y7 head and lock it in VTEC. Torque will suck, and mileage will suck, and idle will suck, but I think it will be a blast up high...

ya i just hooked it up like that again to see what it would do... when the car is just started it idles rough at like 600 half the time or idles at like 1100 nicely(sounds mean)... and once the car is warm is idles normally... and i think vtec kinda comes on and off as you rev from 2000-7500... expessially between like 3000-5000... it kinda surges... but that could be a lot of other things to i suppose... just for kicks i disabled vtec to see how that would be like... and you hardly notice a difference... it doesn't get quite as loud above 5000 but not to much a difference
