vtec no turning on?

I have a d16z6 engine (95 si) and the vtec should kick in at 4800rpm.
I know that when vtec hits you can clearly hear a louder engine note but not in mine...is there something not working here?

well vtec on a p28 is 5500rpms and its sort of hard to hear vtec kick in on a single cam....if its not working you should be getting a code 21 or 22.

I'll get the codes cheked out, but its probably because of the single cam, since i feel so power loss at all.
