Valve noise

I recently did a timing belt change and valve adjustment on my sisters 97 civic ex and a few weeks after im getting knocking from the valves only on cold startup. I adjusted the valves according to specs and dont know what it could be, is there a special trick when adjusting them? Thanks

No, just make sure your lock nuts are torqued down... it doesn't take much. Also, are you 100% certain that you got TDC for each cyl? Cuz that makes a big diff. in my experience, I've found it to not really need much adjustment, just a quick check...if anything.

Some cylinders are hard to get at tdc because it says in the manual for the "up" symbol to point to the side and its hard to tell if its exactly there, any suggestions?

from what youve explained, it sounds like piston slap...its not a bad thing.....if its only when you start the car up (car is cold) and goes away once it warms up, it is normal.....this is because when it gets colder out, the metal contracts and there is excessive piston to wall clearance...the noise you hear is the piston rattling in the bore....you cant do anything about it....it normal to have a bit of noise on any honda engine....I am 95% sure thats what youre hearing

Yeah... this method is a little time consuming, but well worth the effort... get it approximately to where you think TDC is, and then with your feeler gauge... trial and error to see the tighest one you can fit in... then turn another little little bit, and see if that feeler gauge fits now... if you need a smaller feeler gauge, try again... until you find the smallest feeler gauge that will fit in there, and that way you are certain you found the summit of the cam for that cylinder.
