valve lash and timing q's!

i just finished up a head swap after a bhg and i have a few q's

i didn't have time to set the timing spot on tonight....can the timing being off a degree of two cause the car to run hot??

the upper rad hose was almost to hot to touch.

and for a valve lash...do i determine when the pistons are at tdc by the dizzy?

thx

Looking at your car, understanding you did a head swap... i'm going to assume it's a SOHC

1-3 degrees off won't cause damage.. but you'll only be 1-3degrees off if you have a cam gear... otherwise you could be a tooth off on the stock gear, and that's not good, can cause the car to run hotter.
Valve lash should be set with the motor COLD... start at TDC do them in firing order... 1-3-4-2, each time turning the cam gear 1/4 of the way around

actual cam timing is good...i will double check again tomorrow in the day light now that i ran the car for 1/2 hour or so.....

so the (ignition) timing can cause it to run hot then?

is there actual marks to get the pistons to tdc?

and in all honesty...1-4, 3-2 get there at the same time just on different strokes...

yeah, on the crank pulley are marks for 1st cyl TDC, also the cam gears are marked. you need to buy a manual

yeah, and then look at the mark on the cam sprocket. Then you'll see it's marked too. you turn it till the cam sprocket marks make 90 degree rotations.
