Valve Cover bolt..."broke"

ok, so I take off the valve cover to do some head work on the civic, and polish up the valve cover, get the stuff I wanted to do with it, put the valve cover back on and start screwing in the bolts..

I do the bolts from side to side, and I don't screw every bolt in a line, and one of the bolts I tighten up to the way it was before and I hear "snap".

I try to srew in that bolt but it wouldn't go, so I take off the rest of the 4 good bolts and take off the valve cover, to see that the screw's thread peace broke off and is stuck in the hole.

I get the small bit out by making a little slot and I screw it out with a screw driver.

My main problem is where can I buy the Valve Cover bolt??? and if I go purchase it, do I have to purchase the Complete 5, or just that single broken one??

any help would be great...

I think your best bet would be to call Honda and get one from them. You might want to find the correct tightning procedure and the torque specs next time. At least your were able to get the broken bolt out.

id like to know what tools you used to get it out and make the slot in it. Just in case I ever run into this.

well...the way the bolt snapped.....it left a little slot onn the broken part...so I put in a screwdriver to fit that hole and took a hammer and hammered on it to make it stick to the screwdriver, then I just screwed it out

I almost **** my pants when I saw that, figuring I fucked up my head...lol

LOL, i've done that... car had 40K on it... I thought I'd **** myself. I was like... "Dad... I need your skills!!" He drilled the bolt out. loudsubz, you can use what's called an " EZout ", and you can even buy it at sears... comes with all these bits and reverse thread like taps. Funny thing is I was using a torque wrench and I knew the specs... something was just awry. Also note that there are two different length bolts when you go to the dealer to buy... on mine the front is short, the back ones are longer.

even with a torque wrench it's quite easy to snap a bolt like this. It's the way the person tighten's it, if your tightening the bolt worpt or on an angle then you'll snap it if you have great leverage and your tightening the bolt it won't snap. You just have to take your time and don't rush b/c that's when you break things. I heard of the EZout, great tool for this type of situation and always handy especially when removing old corroded spark plugs, many of the times they will snap as soon as you try removing them.

I would get all 5....if one broke that easy, I would bet the others are in simular shape.

Change all of them, just to be on the safe side.

Just change the one! Maybe buy two to keep one on the side for just in case. But just change the one, after all it's not a wear and tear item, it was prob. just a fluke that one broke!

PULOVR, its not the shape of the bolt the way you mean it... it's literally the SHAPE of the bolt... it has this shoulder that's a stopper, so it doesn't per sae get tighter... it litereally just STOPS once the shoulder gets to the head, but the threads continue... that's what makes them so easy to snap. And don't forget, the torque is in INCH LBS, not FT LBS!!!
