valve adjustment question

hey guys just about to do an valve adjustment on my 00 civic sir. now does it matter which way i check for clearance? like i checked cyl#1 intake valve(0.006) from the back it's got a lot of drag but from the front it's perfect slight drag. is there a trick to it? as well as taking off the crank pulley will it affect the timing?
thanks

I like to go at it from the front.. but as long as the gauge goes through it, it doesnt matter which way you put it in.

Why the heck you talking the crank pulley off for?

No it wont affect timing, but the belt could slip off (not likely tho)

yeah had to replace the pulley it had a chunk missing which was eating my belt and the lower timing belt cover which had warped and was being cut into by the pulley.

by the front you mean after loosing the bolt you take the tool off then check it so if you were doing the cyl#1 intake you would be inserting feeler gauge from the adjuster bolt towards the center of the engine right?
