used turbo...good or bad?!

soo my car has the turbo and all off sitting in the shop and i need too decide what too do either...

buy a used turbo with 30,000 - 40,000 kms (exact same one) for $250

OR

get it re-built but the only few places i talked too want aprox $800 and they send it out and il be without it for about a week...

soo im really leaning too the used turbo because its cheaper and easyer plus i dont have too go without a car for another week...

what do you guys think....im probally not gonna get any replies in time as im heading out at 7 am probally too pick up my old turbo...

Also

what are something too look at when buying a used turbo...?

its from a respectable shop i deal with im sure they wont rip me off but its good too know...

go with a used one... then pick up something better when you have the $.

what to look for: bent fins on the compressor and turbine wheels. spin the wheel with your fingers grabbing the nut in the middle. it should spin freely and the longer it spins the better usually. also check shaft play... grab the shaft that goes through the whole turbo and try to wiggle it around... there should be a slight amount of side to side play, but you shouldn't be able to push the shaft in and out (meaning sliding back and forth in the center section). also, if the turbo is interally wastegated look for cracks in the housing around the wg flapper and check the flapper actuation to make sure there are no sticky spots.

get it rebuilt so you arent in the same place in a couple months kicking yourself in the pants

zeeman 20-Jun-2007 10:26 AM

wow $800 for a rebuild?!?!?!
My buddy just had his rebuilt and it didn't cost him $800...skip the middlemen and go directly to the rebuilders, i'm willing to bet the place you contacted is jackin the price up on you to make a buck.

Cynikal.Mindset 20-Jun-2007 10:48 AM

i also concur on the pricing...go to the turbo rebuilder yourself...the shop you're at is jackin up the price so they make moolah off the rebuild too

you can find a new turbo for 800$
