urgent help needed! alternator light keeps coming on!

I've been having a charging problem in my car ever since I shorted my battery in my friends car when he left his lights on..I ended up driving my battery to him in another car anyhow....
I bought a brand new battery saturday.
I've been noticing sometimes while driving at night if Im playing my music, have the lights going and if I flash my high beams, the deck will cut out.
Well tonight on the way home, I go to turn on my lights and my battery light comes on.
I turn them off and the light goes away, I also noticed my coolant temp gauge is not reading properly.

I tightened the belt up abit and it got alittle bit better for a couple mnutes and right back to the battery light coming on even when I apply the brakes or signal.

Anyhow, could it be the belt or the alternator is on its way out?

I need urgent help! please!
thanks,
-Dom

altenator sounds like its on its way out. take it out and bring it to parts source for a test, it's free.

well is the belt real lose? is it squeeling?

Why don't you get an avr test done... or pull the alt. and getting it tested for free at c/t? my bet is on the alt

If you have a large audio system in your car (amp, subs, speakers) and so on I am told that they draw power from the alternator and not from the battery while the car is running. Such is why you need a capacitor or so I am told. So if you do have a system it puts extra strain on your alt. which can cause premature wear. So if it's not a bad belt or anything that could be the cause. If I am wrong forgive me this is what I was told.

Either that or it was just a bad alt. to begin with and you should just replace it.

Well I just checked my ground and it's loose.
I switched batteries with my mom and now if I pump the system with everything on, and flick the high beams, nothing even dims.

The belt is still somewhat loose, more then 1/4'' play. Its stretched as far as the tensioner will allow.
I'm just hoping it will get me through the next 3 days when I buy my next car.
There's a place in mississauga on fewster dr that sells rebuilt units cheap...I guess I'll go pay them a visit either tomorow or on thew weekend.

Thanks for the help so far!
