Turbo install, VAFC or SAFC?

I'm going to install a turbo kit on my SOHC VTEC Civic and was wondering if I should go with a SAFC or VAFC controller? I've read about the MAP seeing boost and setting a CEL code and also read about using an Apexi controller to fool the computer around this. Some guys talk about using a hacked SAFC to circumvent the error (as well as add fuel) and was wondering if the VAFC will do the same thing.

Does the VAFC have the same features as the SAFC plus vtec controller? Can I use a VAFC to eliminate the boosted MAP error code?

Thanks for any advice.

Get the VAFC -- for a vtec motor it will allow you to tune slightly more, and the costs will be about the same.

I'm assuming you are refering to tuning with a "hack"...then yes, both can accomplish what you are trying to do.

yeah, you can raise the VTEC crossover point to 6000 so you make better turbo power. most ppl find turning off VTEC altogether makes best power!!

Thanks all. So basically the VAFC is the SAFC + Vtec controller. Guess I'll go to the VAFC.

Both are stupid. You want to do it right you learn how to tune, get an EPROM burner and do it through the ecu.

using a vafc allows the map to read boost?
I always thought that you had to use check valves (to trick the map and not throw a code and go into limp mode) to relieve the pressure before it got to the map sensor. But i guess since the map sensor wire is cut and the vafc is put inline and alters the signal it would have that capability.
Huh you learn something new everyday.

And i strongly agree with Thrill House.
If you don't however get to use uberdata, chrome, turboedit, you should at least get an ignition module that will retard the timing according to psi levels.

Yeah Zeeman -- do a couple of searches for "AFC Hack" on various US-based boards or google.

You'll be quite suprised how pleased most folks are with this option.

yeah i know what the afc hack is, its a rather inexpensive way to go, i just didn't know that afc's tricked the ecu's into not seeing boost, i guess all it does is modify the signal before it gets to the ecu. Its amazing how much altering 3 signals (VTM, VTEC, MAP) allows you to change stuff. You think that i would know this seeing as i am currently using one, but not on a boosted applicaition, i'm N/A.
I would suggest going with a vafc2, its has adjustment points every 500rpm as opposed to every 1000rpms of the 1st gens.

I agree but this is going on my wife's car (turbo, don't ask) and it'll have to remain automatic. You know how tough, expensive it is to find a chipable automatic ECU?!

Yeah I do know how much it costs actually, my friend just bought a easily chipable 1990 AUTOMATIC civic ex ecu for $100.

Sorry, forgot to mention this is an '96 Civic, ODB2, automatic ODB2 cars are hard to find programmable ECUs for. There are tons of '95 and older computers, '96+ Civics have different, electronic controlled trannies from what I've heard.
