turbo+b16+not tuned= runs like crap???

is it possible for a b16 with a turbo kit to run really bad without a tune, i always thought it would be drivable but not to full potential, my car is drivable but it bogs down and all, could this be related fully to tuning or could this be a problem with the motor in general????

Are you using ANYTHING for engine management? Or did you think you could just put a turbo on your car?

i would hope a response from a forum sponsor/vendor would be more helpful than this.

to answer your question, there are a bunch of different variables that could be wrong in your situation... there is a strong possibility that there is a tuning issue. i had a turbo setup on my car and had tuned it with a vafc and was never really entirely happy with how it ran. then the next summer i had it street tuned with crome and the difference was night and day. another possibility might actually be an issue with the turbo itself. if the turbo is not new and was in rough shape it may not be performing properly which would also greatly hinder driveability. another concern might be fuel delievery... is your engine getting enough fuel to match the increased volume of air being forced into your combustion chambers? also, your exhaust system could also have a negative impact on performance with a turbo setup if it is too small/restrictive. there are many other possibilities as well.

regardless of the problem, you should have someone experienced and patient enough to make sure your concerns are addressed to look at it.

are you trying to use big injectors with a stock ecu?

If so, its dumping WAY too much fuel and causing your car to run like crap.
Check your spark plugs, if they're black or wet and smell like gas, thats the first sign right there that its running super rich.

It was a legitimate question. He hadn't provided any information on what he is using for engine management, so logically one would want to ask if he is using something at all, and if so, what that is.

Once the OP elaborates on his setup it becomes easier to pinpoint the problem, rather then taking shots in the dark.

I am sorry if the post came off as un-helpful, but it would be irresponsible for me to say, YES, get it tuned, when he has nothing to really tune.

well i just got the car for a pretty good price, and the previous owner said it needs to be tuned, right now i saw a fmu under the hood, and its running a p06 computer, when the car seems to want to die there is black smoke coming out of the exhaust, i think my final move is just getting zeeman to tune it, he seems to know EXACTLY what he is doing and i guess i'll just go from there!, thankz for everyones help i really appreciate it

his response certainly seemed more understanding and was an attempt at being helpful.

black smoke? blue smoke? could be crap seals in the turbo...

i'd check the charge piping to see if theres any oil. as for that FMU, they are junk. dont use them. if you run boost on stock injectors using a FMU - you run the risk of running really lean while in boost, which can destroy your engine.

imo, see zeeman asap. his rates are REALLY good, and he is one of only a few people who i let touch my car.

get it tuned man, we just finished up tuning my b16 turbo crx on 5-6 psi, this thing is a beast, pulls really hard and runs smooth.
You cant just install a turbo and expect it to run well. CromePro ftw
