turbo in a automatic car

hey

i was wondering if i could put a turbo in my car without blowing up the tranny ( d16y8 motor )

ive been told by some that i can and some that i cant

im not looking for hugh amount of power a small turbo would be fine

imported_mikepasini 19-Jul-2006 10:18 AM

thats low... hopefully thats air ride...

i would do it, some ppl sell d-series turbos for like 800-1000 complete... do that and do a 5-speed swap... would be much better IMO...

turbod16.com.

nuff said.

Yes it can be done. Grand Nationals are all automatic turbos.

yep an automatic car can be turbo'd, and it could be a plus because its hard to shift faster and smoother then a computer...

i know there are alot of turbo'd and s/c automatics

as for air i m pretty sure he is, i know some ppl from clubel..

ELGUY 27-Jul-2006 08:39 PM

Yeah I was chatting with the JRP guys last year, and they were saying they new of quite a few successfull auto turbo setups. You can spool the turbo, just like loading the motor.

apparently there was a guy in cayuga last year who was running 13's with all stock automatic tranny and motor in a EK, boosted.

would be better for bracket racing , NO?

its not really a plus because auto trannys dont like to see that kidna power.

get a tranny cooler kit.

Upgrade to a higher stall torque converter, that would be a big plus.

http://www.levelten.com check them out.

It is very good for bracket racing.
Another plus with an auto tranny is that you dont lose boost between shifts, due to the throttle plate staying open.

I have to look but I used ot have this web site that was DIY for "tiptronic" you can turn this thing on and upshift split second. Although you can't use it to downshift so you have to turn it off and let the tranny down gear by itself...If you're interested in doing it, let me know and I'll try my best to dig it up.
My buddy did it in his colt and i couldn't believe he was screeching 3rd with an auto box.

can sumone send me in the right directing were to go to have sumthing like this done

ive called a couple places (not gonna say were ) but they said it cant be done

and wut would it caost roughly to do it

also wut about a supercharger instead would that be a better choice?

chris_si98 28-Jul-2006 05:40 PM

turbo is better than a s/c anyday. especially on our engines.

check out defcon racing.. or have it done privately.

imported_2join performance 28-Jul-2006 08:00 PM

Actually in this case, a supercharger is an option to consider. While it will provide less horsepower then a turbocharger, most likely, the fact that the auto tranny can only support a certain amount of limited power anyways negates the potential for more power with a turbo.
The upside of going supercharged with an auto tranny is that you will have most of your power at low rpm's which is exactly where you want it with an auto car. Unless you keep driving your car at WOT, an auto tranny will upshift before you see the benefits of a 48/60.

Konfuzed, I sent you a pm with some info. The shops that say it CANT be done are being silly. It CAN be done, but like I said in the pm, our auto trannies unfortunatly have their limits. 160whp shouldn't be much of a problem, but anything above that gets risky. I would say 180whp would have to be the limit, but thats just an estimate.

B18C5er 28-Jul-2006 08:35 PM

A general rule of thumb when it comes to Superchargers is that it takes power to make power. When it comes to a Honda D-series, power is not something in abundance.

imported_2join performance 28-Jul-2006 08:44 PM

Thats true. But when your limited to 160whp it doesnt matter too much. Plus the benefit of having your power down low is important in an auto car.

Cham 29-Jul-2006 09:40 AM
