Tune-up question

I had a full tune-up by Honda performed on my 98SI at around 95,000k's. New plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor, fuel filter, and the egr valve.

My car now has 140,000k's and doesn't run as smooth as it used to, so I think it's time for another tune-up. According to the service manual, the spark plugs are supposed to be changed every 48,000 k's, so I'm about due for new plugs. The manual doesn't say when the car is due for everything else though (wires, cap/rotor, etc). How long can you usually go before all these other parts need to be changed? Should I just do everything all over again, or only the plugs?

Thx.Mike:thumbup:

Spend the $200 on a new dist cap, rotor, plugs and wires from honda and do it yourself, its super easy. Your car will thank you.
Wait, don't get the spark plugs from honda, they are like $60. Go to crappy tire and get some NGK's they are only like $12 for 4.

get soem good fine wire NGK's gap them correctly and change the oil...change the tranny oil to some GM synchromesh (the best you can buy)...

If the car doesn't bog or feel weird,, just change the plugs.

I know I need plugs for sure, and maybe wires too. Thats why I wanted to know how long wires generally last. What about cap/rotor? Fuel filter? How long do they last before they need to be changed?

Oil change is this week. I get them for free from Honda. The GM tranny fluid I can only find at one dealer in my area. I just have to go pick it up. They have a whole case that someone ordered and never picked up.

i'm not sure how long wires are "supposed" to last but i've had the same ones for like 2 years now... they still have normal resistance so i just keep em :shrugs:

i haven't done the cap and rotor in a very long time as well so thats gotta get done soon :(

when I do a tune up I do it all...but then again I get it all for like 100bucks!

plus new NGK wires just look so nice

Cynikal, where do you get cheap NGK plug wires?? My Saturn needs new wires I think...

my plug wires are 115K/6 years old - original that came on the car. cap and rotor were replaced 8K ago as part of regular maintenance.

I went to crappy tire to look for some ngk for my model but it had a " - " under the part number.. Does that mean they don't have it for my model or are the dx and lx the same for si and sir?

DumbasSi 14-Jun-2004 11:13 AM

Untouchable I'm going part shopping today. I'll let you know what I find. Parts Source might be a better choice then CT. Sometimes they carry more variety then CT.

yO 14-Jun-2004 11:17 AM

Sounds good.

Thanks bro,

Are you also buying new wires?

DumbasSi 14-Jun-2004 12:55 PM

NGK wires #ZFR5F11 $14 for 2 from Parts Source. If they say they don't carry them, ask to see the NGK parts book and look up your car and engine code. They have to order the wires in, so I'm going to shop around a little.

GM Syncromesh Friction Modified Transmission Fluid. #12377916 or #10953509 $28 for 2 bottles from a GM dealer out in the sticks. All the dealers around here can't get it, or it will take "some time" to get it.

u should have come to me for that tune up remember.
p.s. it is best to change them every 24,000 u may be able to get 30,000 but plugs are cheap so 24k is not asking to much if you love your car.

DumbasSi 14-Jun-2004 03:09 PM

imported2nv I was still planning on it. I was just shopping around for prices and stuff, but I imagine you can get the stuf for cheaper. I still have the pm you sent me.
