is this true...

Friend of my brother just got 5 bolt conversion on his VW and he was saying the reason is for increased transfer of power (hp, torque) to wheels, is this true?

i always thought that the purpose of having more bolts is to have a firmer hold on the wheel for cars pushing a lot o' power.

i searched and the only thing i found was this

I believe 5 Bolts are needed for bigger motors with larger Torque curves, that need 5 bolts instead of 4, for more rigidity and better power transfer to the wheels...

i.e. Prelude, ITR, CTR, all V6 motors, etc...

Also, when you have a lot of torque and HP, you need stronger wheels, that have to be attached firmily to the car. So then you need more bolts to do this.

That is also why Trucks have 8 Bolts and so on...

cant remember which thread or who posted but thats all i found on it.

well fox body 5liter mustangs had 4-bolts wheels...and we all know the power of them things...I guess its really to ****** the load of the wheel over a larger area...who knows?

I would like to know the real story!

You'll break traction well before you'll sheer off your lug nuts.

Another thing is, your brakes "put out" about 800-1200 negative horsepower so if anything, your brakes will break the bolts well before your engine power does.

The number of lugs you have depends on the weight of the vehicle, the torsional and latteral loads that are expected in the extreme. The greater the number of lugs, the greater the area of where the force is to be ****** out. Also, the greater the bolt circle the greater the area. So a 4x100 is lesser than a 4x114 bolt pattern. 5 bolts just gives you a more stable point of connection and reduces stud stretch if there is any (unlikely since the car is likely to break traction before any of this happens).
