Trouble in between 5-5,700 RPM

I have a B16a and i had done some mods to it, like Stg II Cams and ever since i droped them in... i'm having this problem. u see when the motor is at operating temp. the car kind bogs at 5,000 RPM b4 entering Vtec i guess. Its kinda like when the rev limiter hits, anyway... BUT! when the car is just started and the temp is still rising, it enters the High RPM's smoothly no bogging, I grounded my Vtec pressure switch and that helped a lot! but now its only in between 5-5700 rpm.

I got a code 22
i kno that has something to do with Vtec, but i would like to kno if anyone has ever had this problem. as has some sorta idea what it could be.

did u upgrade the valve springs and retainers? Cause i know the stage II cams i got REQUIRE a dual valve spring and titanium retainers which obviously i got. Which cams did u get?
Take the VTEC solenoid off and see if there is anything stuck or broken inside. Code 22 is the VTEC pressure valve. Check this out

Hope this helps and good luck. Honda-tech is fully of mostly good info, just use the search function and you can find pretty much anything out. Does anyone else think that the lots of guys on H-T are kinda pricks?

that would suck large just installing stage 2 came without valvesprings

punkindrublic 25-Jul-2004 04:10 PM

some stage 2 cams dont require valve springs... some do... its good practice to do so on a honda though.... cause you want your stock ***** springs sliding a big cam at 8000 rpm? :shrugs:

i doubt thats the actual problem but look into it in the future...

the vtec selenoid might actually be stuck off... does vtec even engage? could also be problems with oil pressure.. the vtec selenoid needs a certain amount of pressure to lock on as well....

I wasn't implying that not having upgraded valve springs and retainers was the problem at all, just simply asking out of curiosity.

I have Titanium Ferrea Dual springs that handle 10,000rpm but obviously i never take it there.

have you had the ECU tuned for the new Cam??? you say it bogs before hitting vtec maybe this cam is tuned to hit vtec before that bogging point only way to know is to get to a dyno and tune the ecu

bbarbulo 26-Jul-2004 08:50 AM

^^ exactly

El_LoCo 26-Jul-2004 03:09 PM

would a VAFC work??

imported_gatherer 26-Jul-2004 03:45 PM

maybe but I'd still recommend a ecu tune.. possibly a AEM plug and play unit or a hondata unit

El_LoCo 26-Jul-2004 06:04 PM

hondata! thats too much money! anyways..... i changed my chip over to Mugen, from Skunk2 and all though this chip has a little less power than the skunk2, it runs WAY better! the vtec engage a lot smoother still a little rough but i guess that cuz of the bigger cams. i'm gonna take it to the dyno and get it tuned, anyone kno any good ppl who do tunning?

imported_JookSingKid 26-Jul-2004 06:11 PM

get another chip for your ECU.

Hyperduck has chips available for aftermarket cams
