Which transmission is more reliable and durable? AUTO or MANUAL?

Just wondering after talking about this with some friends, which tranny would last longer?

manual is much better, honda auto's are garbage

I would have to agree...

The honda automatics on the 1.6 vtecs are very problem prone. Honda auto on the V6 accords are pretty bad too.

its up to the owner of the car...imo doesn't matter whether auto vs. manual...its how u take care of ur transmission and how u drive too!

imported_viper_2_4 20-Nov-2005 11:22 AM

manual.....the design of an automatic transmission will wear out over time no matter what (if you take care of it it will take a longer time)......plus I would rather have to change a clutch than overhaul an automatic transmission...

a manual transmission should last quite a bit longer than automatics if you know how to drive.

and as mentioned above, honda auto's suck

rjngo 20-Nov-2005 11:56 AM

so my auto suck then?? :(

oh well...its just a car anyway :)

Based around real life application...

Automatic will outlast a manual tranny

Manual trannies are typically abused, and the automatic does a better job at shifiting at the right points.

Synchros get eaten up in a manual tranny.

Althought I prefer to drive manual, automatics last longer because they typically escape abuse.

no it doesnt really suck.
my only beef with my stupid auto is that it downshifts for every damn thing.

a small uphill climb and itll downshift, u press it lightly and itll downshift. am at the point where i get really happy if it doesnt downshift sometimes in city driving.

it seems hard to keep this thing revving under 2500 rpm all the time

JookSingKid is right.

If u drive it regular and don't put it into 1 then 2 then D on automatic your tranny should last long. For manual they do last long too but then u need to change the clutch and also the 3rd gear grinds a lot on some Honda's. Maybe their synchronizer isn't that good or is worn out.

dont forget putting it into neutral, revving it up, and putting it into drive (neutral drop)
